Just starting on my second project camaro. A 1969 with a 427. I am
looking for opinions on exhaust systems. I have always heard flowmasters
have the best sound. I have been to 3 different performance shops here in
Mobile and Birmingham and have been told at all three that the FlowTech
Terminators are the way to go because they are a bit quieter and put out
more horsepower on the dyno that all the other mufflers including the
Flowmasters. If you respond to this with a vote for Flowmasters, let me
know if you prefer the 2 chamber or 3 chamber model, and why. I want the
best performing muffler but I also want a good deep sound. On the other
hand, I do not want to wake up half of Mobile if I want to drive this car
to work in the morning.
To give you guys something more to work with, here are some of the engine
specs: 427 border .030 over, heads shaved, steel crank, competition cam,
hooker headers, Mallory ignition, Holly carb and intake.
Oh yeah, I tentatively plan to install 3 inch aluminized pipes all the way,
if you have a better idea or opinion on that I would love to hear it.

I have three chamber flowmasters on my 69 (21/2 inch pipe) and love the
sound. Noise is high however. My next mufflers are going to be 3 inch
DynoMax super turbos. Power seems about equal but the Walkers are
significantly more quiet. 3 inch pipe is still 3 inch pipe, so even with
full tail pipes, unless you run Hemi mufflers, it's going to be loud but
all things are relative.

"If it's got a motor it's probably worth spending money on"
Hey Mike,
I'm just starting a 69 Camaro 427 project myself. Right now, the subframe
is off, and I'm working on the suspension and front brakes. I see you are
from Alabama. Any chance you purchased the 427 that was listed on the
Traderonline.com? I got to it after it was already sold. Found one right
here in Chattanooga, though. The body is almost finished, but needs drive
train work. The motor is from a '69 Impala. I'm thinking Yenko clone. Lets
stay in touch.
Gary
In that case my vote is against the flowmaster. They are extremely
loud, even the 3-chamber model. I know a guy that has them on
his 69 camaro w/ 454 and dual 3" pipes. He got pulled over
just idling. Yes it's that loud.
I'm putting dyomax's on my 454 vette today. If you're interested
I'll give you feedback ones they're on. Email me if you want my
impressions.

I used to have a '72 Camaro with a very healthy 327/4 speed. Ran headers with
dual Thrush Turbo mufflers. I decent muffler at a reasonable price. I liked the
sound of 'em though. They had a deep tone, but not too loud unless the revs got
up over 3 grand. At 5 grand they scream. Only got pulled over once because of them
in 8 years, and that was because I was pretty stupid at the time (revved it up in
a residential neighborhood late at night repeatedly). Gotta admit, the cop was
pretty cool. He could have written me up good. I used downturn pipes about a foot
long on the outgoing side of the muffler. I believe that it helped tone it down
quite a bit. I ran straight pipes from the headers to the mufflers, and the mufflers
were located just behind the rear seat, but ahead of the rear end. A big block will
probably sound a bit different though.
