The Screamin' chicken was on 2nd gen's up to 81. I have seen a few
3rd/4th gens w/ aftermarket decals (usualy black n' gold). I think
they look good..especialy on 4th gens (have that certain look..I
dunno).
I think it would be unique..

Actually, I believe they were available from `85-`87 (although I am not sure).
I had the opportunity to buy a black and gold Trans Am with a gold bird a while
back, and I thought the hood bird really added to the look of the car.
Unlike the birds on the older Trans ams which were solid colors, the birds on
the third gens were more of an outline type decal.

I had a blue 83 TA w/ a silver bird decal on the hood. It was aftermarket, but
I thought the car looked great with it. It really set it apart from others
(these cars are everywhere you look, it seems). Assuming you've got the red w/
gray or silver ground effects, I'd go with a gray or silver decal.

I have a '79 TA that I replaced the hood bird on 9 or 10 years ago. It is
the multi-color blue screaming chicken. I got it mail order from a place
called Phoenix Graphics in Scottsdale, Arizona if I remember right. They
used to advertise in the back of Hot Rod type magazines. They had many
colors and years available, so you might check them out. They used to
advertise complete decal sets for the different years, but they sold me just
the hood decal when I asked.
I highly recommend Phoenix Graphics if they are still around. The Hood bird
was almost identical to the factory one, except for the number of tail
feathers (and was about $200 cheaper at the time). If you didn't study two
side by side, you would never notice the difference. The quality was
excellent too. My wife and I put it on (It's a two person job because of
size)and it still looks like new today. The car has been mostly garaged, but
I would imagine it would hold up as well as original to sun fade.
In my biased opinion, I think the 79 decals were the most flamboyant and cool
looking of the bunch. (I think they were used 79-81 and I know they had a
red/silver package). I'm not sure if there is enough hood space to put one
on a third generation car, but that was my intention if I ever bought one. I
think it would add alot of character. My 79 has been so great, I have not
been able part with it.

You're right, I forgot they changed the hood bird again in 80. The 79 decal
is a one-year design, but came in several different color schemes for the
"normal" Trans Ams. The tenth anniversary edition in 79 was also different
and actually was larger than the hood. There have been a variety of hood
bird designs used over the years to choose from. There is also the option of
having one custom painted, if you have the money or skill. I always thought
the big screaming chickens on the hoods added a lot to the character of the
2nd gen TA's and was sad to see the bold graphics scaled back to match every
other lowly car on the road.

Thanks for the update. Phoenix Graphics is one of the places I was
considering - they claim to be GM approved, etc. I garage mine as well
(winters are harsh in Eastern Canada), so hopefully I can have the same
success you are having.
Thanks again for the input...

part number 10006159 is used on 79-80 F car (doesn't say trans am specifically,
but doesn't exclude it), so it might not hold true that the decal is one year
design in all cases in 1979, but for the most part this is true.

I have an '83 Trans Am, black & gold in color, with the offset air
induction scoop thing. There is a gold-trimmed chicken on the scoop,
that fades towards the front of the hood. It doesn't take up all of
the hood, it just follows the lines of the rearward-facing scoop.
Hope this helps.
