Could someone help me with the correct size of tires for a 67 Camaro SS
convertible. I realise they were crossply but I will put on radials. The
car currently has 8.25 cross ply's on the front and HR78-14 radials on the
rear, ( and handles like a pig) which are rubbing on the inboard side of
the wheel arch. All the manuals I have make no reference to the tire size.

Thanks,
Brian

> Hey Brian,
I own a 69 Camaro myself and would say that it all depends on the size
of your
wheels. On the front, no matter what width wheel, don't go any wider
than a
235. You should probably use 60 series tires, front and back. On the
back of
my 69, I run a 275-60r15 mounted on an 8-inch wide Rally. That is about
the limit
on width. But the all-round best choice for the back and it won't rub,
is a 255
series tire. Rubbing will depend on the condition of your rear
suspension.

Good luck,
SR

The standard tire for the SS was E 70 14, which, I think, is 24.75 " tall. A
195-70-14 is about the same height. In 1969, Z/28 came with a F-70-15, which is
25.75" tall. a 215-65-15 is close at 26" tall. A friend put 255-70-15's on the
back of his '69 Z/28, and he rubs occasionally. He has 225-70-15 in the front,
and he's OK there. Remember, if you put ovewrsize tires on your car, Your
speedo will be off.

I'm running 235 60 TA's all around. I do notice a little sidewall rub when
I crank it too hard, but doesn't seem to be a problem. Running the same
size tires all around will allow for correct tire rotation, but this
depends on how much you drive your car. I think you will be happy with this
size tire because it looks plenty wide and provides for an excellent ride.
Any larger size, and you will experience problems. Both BF Goodrich &
Goodyear would be a good choice...just stay away from Jap tires including
Firestone...they don't belong on American metal. Good Luck, Jeff 67
RS/SS Convertible.

The original size is F70-14 on 6" rims. I don't remember what diameter
that is, but I switched my '68 to 205R-14's on 7" rims and that was
about the same diameter. With the tires you have, you'll get severe
understeer. Obviously you don't have the shop manual, but the base
model tire size was 7.35-14. The F series tires optional and standard
on the SS. The Z/28 had E60-15's.
