I am getting a 33 and a 36 code on my 88 GTA 5.7. The 36 refers to a maf
burnoff unit (burnoff relay). The Pontiac dealer says the burnoff relay is
included in the MAF. The parts stores don't even have a burnoff unit to sell
me, they have never heard of it. But someone told me it is located near the
firewall on the drivers side. I want to replace the burnoff unit if iti s
cheap, then if that doesnt fix the prob, do the MAF.

Anyone heard of a burnoff unit in an 88 GTA ?

Thanks,

John

Hi John,
On my 89 corvette, I have a burnoff relay and a power relay. I've had some
problems in the past with these relays. I suggest just changing them both out
(less than $20) and a 10 minute job. On the corvette, they are the same part
number. They also are the same part number as the fan relay and the fuel pump
relay. Keep an extra one or two around.

The indications of these relays going bad are: stalling after starting, hard
start, very low idle. The burnoff relay sends power to the MAF to clean the
sensing wire after shutdown to have the engine ready for the next start. Good
luck.

Burn off relay.

Yep, heard of it, and replace a couple too. It's on the firewall
*usually* on the drivers side. It's FLAT, about 3"x3" square. NOT like a
regular relay. (it's electronic, not mechanical) BTW, if it isn't a
remote unit then it's built into the MAF. There's always been two of the
same looking relay's right next to each other that I can remember. Don't
confuse the Fuel Pump and Horn relay set with the burn off relay.

Preacher,

Sure enough, there is a 3" x 3" x 1.5" box attached to the bottom of the MAF
itself. I bet that box is the burnoff relay and maybe even the power relay too.

Looks like I have to take the big risk and lay out $190 (yikes !) for the
remanned MAF and hope it gets rid of the SES light and the 33 and 36 codes.

The parts guys and the Pontiac dealer tell me the burnoff relay is part of the
MAF on this 88 GTA (as you said it might be), so I guess its MAF time !!!

The burnoff relay on an '88 GTA would be mounted by the power brake
booster and is oval, about 2.5 inches tall. So is the fuel pump relay
and the power relay. I just replace the one in my '89 pickup which has
the engine from an '88 350 TPI GTA in it. It was nine buck and some
change at the GM dealer. The square thing (3x3) mounted under it and on
the same bracket is the timing module.

This is so simple I'm sure I've misunderstood the thread all three times
I've read it <grin>. Hell, just replay all the relays one at a time with
one new one and if that doesn't work replace the MAF, you'll find the
problem.

I checked the firewall by the brake booster. Yes, there are2 oval units with
the same part number, but only 2 ovals. To the left of them is a square part
with a different part number.
All 3 on the same bracket. Black wire going into one of the ovals, gray wire
going into the other oval.

Here's the latest "fact" concerning the location and/or the existence of a
remote burnoff unit (for the MAF) in an 88 GTA :
Chilton's Auto Repair Manual 1988 - 1992, on last page of F-body section (
chapter 22 page 50) says the Burnoff Relay (88-89) is located BEHIND THE ECM
!!!!! Now if I can just find out where the ECM is....

The ECM is your computer, I think it's in the passenger side kick panel.

The ECM is the computer mounted under the dash on the far right side.
But... the burnoff relay wasn't mounted there on an '88 GTA. I've
stripped the wiring out of one of these cars to use in a pickup. I did
find it there on an older Camaro though but not on the Pontiac GTA. I've
e-mailed you back the correct location of the two MAF relays, fuel pump
relay and ESC module along with some other info.
