Is is possible to replace just the accelerator pump
in a 74 quadrajet WITHOUT REMOVING THE CARBURETOR FROM
THE INTAKE MANIFOLD? Any web sites with instructions
on how to do so?

I believe if you remove the air horn from the carb, you should be able to get
right in there to change the pump. Make sure the pump you buy is looked up by
referencing the OEM tag stamping number to the listing in the catalog. Of
course, you'll need a new air horn gasket, which most aftermarket firms offer.
Might be worth your while to buy a whole carb kit. Personally, I'd just
rebuild the carb entirely, since you're disturbing it, but that is just me.

Good luck.

Most of Rochester's carbs can. There is some linkages that will have to be
removed (of course) to allow you to remove the airhorn. After that you
should have access to the pump.

It is possible to replace the accelerator pump by removing the top plate of
the carb and some of the linkage rods. BUT there is a very good chance that
a screw or other small part could fall into the intake (and then you would
be fucked). It would be better to take the carb off. At most parts stores
the only way to buy the accelerator pump is to buy the whole rebuild kit.
For instructions any decent parts store should have a Q-Jet repair book.

Most aftermarket carb parts makers offer pump pistons as a separate item. Some
kits still include the entire pump, some offer just the replacement cup, often
made of a fuel resistant material. I agree with you on rebuilding the whole
carb.

Reply: Although it is possible to replace the accelerator pump on your carb w/o
removing it from the manifold, you will have to remove the linkage and the
bolts that hold it onto the engine anyway to get the top of the carb off. And
(heaven forbid), you should drop anything down it's throat(it will choke) or
bend a metering rod(it's tonsils) when you put everything back together. Take
it from me I've done it a couple of times, it is far, far better to do it right
and remove the whole thing. While your at it buy a rebuild kit and do it all.
(not very difficult) (an afternooner). Just remember this: (If it don't fit
right, don't force it). You'll be glad in the end. Good luck
