can anyone tell me (approximately) the fastest quarter-mile recorded on a
street-legal car? Some guys I work with (one of whom is the epitome of
rice - 100% show, 10% go on his MR2 with the superfin) claimed that the
fastest was like a 9.5 set by a Civic hatchback (a POS Civic hatchback, for
god sakes!), and I was pretty damn sure that was too slow to be the true
fastest mark... not that it's slow, but there's been faster. Any help would
be appreciated, thanks

Mike Moran and Pat Musi have 6 second 200MPH
Camaros. Moran's is a refrigerator white 94 and Musi's is a green
with pinkish redstriped 69.

There is a C4 Corvette(mid to late 80's) that races out at
Heartland Park in Topeka. It turns low 8's.

They drive it into Kansas City and cruise the streets.
It is fully street legal.

For a time, the fastest 0-100-0 was held by a Caterham Super-seven.
That was the record holder for standard production road cars. Just
shows what you can achieve with a car that weights 1600 pounds.

That record included all the Porsches, Ferraris, muscle cars etc.

Something alot of you people are forgetting is that there's a difference
between daily driver, and something that can "technically" be driven on the
street. I guess the boys from Outlaw Street in the NMCA then are the
quickest. Last I checked Randy Adler was driving a blown 66 GTO in the high
6's at over 200 miles per hour. Mufflers, DOT approved tires, working turn
signals and wipers. Too bad its a blown Olds Kieth Black engine though. :)
Fastest daily driven car....now THAT is something I'd like to see. Nothing
gets the blood going then a guy who plain doesnt give a shit about his ride,
and is his only way to work the next day.

1) That 9.5 second Civic is anything but street legal (tube framed, lexan,
fiberglass, etc)

2) 9.5 is not nearly the fastest street legal car. A guy at our local track
used to have an 8 second street-legal 68 Camaro.

True, but that wasn' t the oiginal poster's question. He
merely wanted to know what the fastest street car was. Not the
fastest daily driver was. I will guarantee that the Civic that his
friend was "bragging" about wasn't a daily driver either. By the way,
how pathetic is it to brag about someone elses Civic? Ugly.

Hey,
First off you friends are Ricers so their going to be biased on the whole
thing. That's like asking a F-Body guy," Do you like Rice cars?" Few will say
yes.
The fastest I am unsure of however if you are looking for the fastest street
legal rice car there is a '98 ( I don't know the year for sure ) Supra around my
area that does 8.8XX in the 1/4 mile. He has two seats in it and is just barely
( I mean barely ) street legal. However it hasn't probably gone to emissions so
that will determine if its a street car or not. It has Stage 4 Turbos, huge ass
intercooler, 250 HP Shot of Nitro, street slicks in front and rear, nothing in
the inside except the bare necessity, and so fourth. Its not worth it to take a
perfectly good street car and then have it border line it being a street car for
nothing. So you can call it a street car, but your not going to do a 1/4 mile in
the high 8's all the time. Remember roads do curve on the street. On a drag
strip its straight and smooth ( well depends on the track but thats what you am
for when you build them ) so you don't have to worry about body role or stiff
suspension ect.
"Street legal " drag racer to me are cars that that do 13's 12's and maybe
11's after that your wasting money on your car just to call it a street car.
There exceptions though. If you can find a low 11's or high to mid 10's car from
the factory or make a budget "street legal drag racer" that can do 11's or 10's
then by all means go for it. It rarely happens but it has happened. If you ask
me you should just go full fledge and make a drag car tubed and all. It adds up
the point where make a street car isn't really a street car anymore. Those are
the people you find in the classifieds with some guy selling a " 1977 Nova
Tubed and ready for the Strip. Minus Engine/Trans for 4,000 ". That's was in the
paper last week.
My whole point is don't be so surprised when you hear about that kind of
crap. It is impressive but once you hear see what the guy did and how much he
spent on the whole damn then you'll just think twice and wake away.

They are not....... he put them on there some strange reason don't
ask. Supra's now a days are RWD ( I think they always have been ),
I-6's, with the option of Turbos.
The only reason I see in using slicks are if it was AWD. They don't
burn out with there front tires so why but them? I don't think you could
gain anything from them, but he is a ricer so.....

And how much money does it take to make a ricer keep up with a warmed-over

build from there.

Slicks automatically yoink it from the "street legal" category. Have a CHIP
pull you over and you're running slicks? You're getting a ticket. Period.
They sit outside our local dragstrip and watch everyone split from the track
to make sure that they're not on slicks.

That's entrapment. At least here in SC it is. That is
exactally the same as a cop waiting outside of a bar, and as soon as
you pull out of the driveway, they give you a breathalizer andf throw
you in jail. With even a crappy lawyer, no jury will hold that up.
OK for the cop to warn you in either instance (beer, tires),
but not arrest you. If you get burned like this, fight it!
One last thing, anyone who runs the street on slicks has more
dollars than sense, cause they will wear out in a day!

Can't be entrapment. To entrap, the cop must take action to
cause you to brake the law. Unless he buys you drinks then
pulls you over, it shouldn't be entrapment (and maybe not even then).

I don't want cops pulling over cars to check if their tires are legal, just
because they are coming out of the drag strip. But be realistic - if you
run slicks in the wet on a public road, you are a danger to everyone
else out there. Similarly, if you drink & drive you should be taken
off the road.

I also wonder at people leaving the strip and NOT expecting the fuzz
to be there. I grew up riding bikes in England, and that gave me the
necessary (not) paranoid attitude. There I expect to be banned
from bars, just because of my bike. I expect to get pulled over
for no good reason. I expect the cops to be unreasonable, I expect
the other road users to be idiots, and it keeps me alive & ticket-free.

I agree with almost every statement you made. But it IS
entrapment. Every race I have ever been to ther are paramedics and
cops already there, to keep it from getting too rough, and to help the
drivers if ther is a crash. However, a cop CANNOT wait outside of a
bar and randomly pull you over because you just left there. You have
to be swerving or something to warrant a pull-over. Again that is
here in SC. And yes it is assinine to run slick on the road.

No no Erik. Go look in a summit racing or Jegs catalog and you'll see that
there's 2 kinds of slicks. The "D.O.T." approved kind, and those that are
not. DOT = department of transportation approved. If they're approved then
they're legal. If not....not.

That reminds me of a story. This cop is sitting outside of a bar known for
it's rowdy clientele waiting for closing time. The first guy that comes out
gets in his car, bounces through the ditch, and proceeds down the road. The
cop goes after him. The guy calmly tools down the road doing the speed
limit for about 10 minutes before pulling over. When the cop checks the guy
out he's bone-cold sober. When the cop asked him what the deal was, the guy
replied," The bars empty now" and just grinned like hell...

Nope...it isn't entrapment, otherwise you could use that argument for
a speedtrap.
If a cop comes into the bar and challenges you to a drinking contest
hoping his buddy will catch you on the way out, then you may have a
point....otherwise,no.
