I have a 400 SB with a small (153 tooth) flywheel. The starter is the
straight bolt pattern but the block wants an offset bolt pattern. The only
nose cones I've found for an offset pattern are for the large (168 tooth)
flywheel.

Is there or was there ever a 153 tooth starter with an offset bolt pattern?
Either by GM or any aftermarket?

And yes, when I got the car, the starter was held in by the one bolt plus
the bracket in the front. And yes, that's why I need to fix it, it moved
and stripped the starter drive.

If you go to an Auto parts store, just ask the guy to bring a bunch of the
starters out to look at. Their computers don't tell them which are which.
A lot of them have a universal design with 4 holes on them. Hopefully you
will get lucky and find one.

I just put a 400 in my car, I went to Autozone and got a starter for a 74
el camino. It is the diagonal bolt pattern. By the way, is that small
flywheel externally balanced, like a 400 requires? Im not really sure,
but I think that my flywheel was 168, and I know that it was the one that
went with the motor, which I knew came out of a 74 El Camino.

Hope that helped some,

I've found a few that have 4 holes, but unfortunately all 4 of them are the
straight bolt pattern. That's great for putting either a 153 or 168 tooth
flywheel on a block with a straight bolt pattern.

But my block has an offset bolt pattern. I have yet to see a starter that
works with both flywheels and offset bolt patterns.

I've been hitting the "Auto Electric" stores around and they all say the
153/offset combination doesn't exist. But I find it really hard to believe
given how many offset pattern blocks there are. But I've been wrong before.

I don't believe any 400 SBC ever came with a 153 wheel or flexplate from
the factory, and there were never any offset pattern starters for the 153
wheels either, on any Chevy. However, it IS possible to rebalance a wheel
to 400 specs, but more than likely the wrong wheel is installed in the
vehicle.

Also I have never seen an externally balanced 153 tooth factory flexplate or
flywheel. They do make an externally balanced lightweight 454 flywheel but
the out of balance is not the same.
They make weight flanges that go between the crank flange and the flexplate
that you can use with an internally balanced flexplate on a 400 small block.
Good Luck.

just a note - I have a 454 and got an 11" flywheel that was not
weighted. (my first big block - learninjg. :)

Turns out the a good machine shop can drill the back of the flywheel
on the ooposite side of where weight would have been, and it will work
fine. Cost: $35.

Hays makes an externally balanced 153 tooth 400 flexplate. Just contact one
of the companies that sell Hays products. I believe Jegs and Summit both
sell them.
