Took my 84 firebird into smog today in Ca. (305, carbed, 5spd) ended up
shooting out somewhere around 300ppm Hydrocarbons. All the smog equipment is
there, and the last tune-up was in oct of 2002. Any ideas on what to do to get
to an acceptable level? (somewhere around 80ppm I think) any help is
appreciated.

It was I, you fools! The man you trusted wasn't Wavy Gravy at all! And
all this time, I've been smoking harmless tobacco!
What was I laughing at now? ...Oh yes, that crippled Irishman!
One thing you CAN try, as a quick fix, is get a can of CRC Emissions
additive, Pep Boys has it, and follow the instructions. Also, change your
oil BEFORE you go in for the test...like, the day of, or before.
Be amazed at how the readings can vary.

Was high HC was your only failure? It could be that the car/catalyst
was not fully warmed up. Otherwise, an ignition defect would account
for abnormally high HC (without increases of CO or O2).
It would also be wise to ckeck your EVAP system as the purge valves
leak and cause high HC's. Also it is worth checking the carb and M/C
solenoid dwell. Leaking o-rings on the idle air bleed make the
feedback Q-jets run very lean at idle and could account for increased
HC (with O2) at idle.
