hi
i have an 84 firebird. i need to put some speakers in my dash(factory
location). it naturallly fits 4x6's. will these sound better or worse than
4's. there is not much room under the dash so i can't put anything bigger than
4x6's in there(i'm not cutting my dash to pieces). i also don't have the time
or money for kickpanels or anything like that so i need something that will fit
in the dash. so which will sound better, 4's or 4x6's?? which will produce
better highs, mids, and lows?? i know about the 4x6 plates, but i want to know
the differences in the regular 4x6's and 4's. any reccommendations on brands
would be appreciated. i am looking at pioneer and kenwood but would appreciate
other recommendations. thanks.

Believe it or not, with the right plate, you can get a 5" round speaker
in that hole without cutting anything. It does mean that you remove the
dash itself, which, if I remember correctly, is only 6 screws. I put in
2 5" 2way plus 2 1" tweeters in my 83 TA. Plus, I mounted 6" mid-range
speakers in my doors, 3way 6 x 9's in the rear pillars, and 1 12" sub
in the rear well.

The speakers I used were JBL (front, doors, rear) and the tweeters were
Altec Lansing. I don't remember the model numbers anymore. It's been
about 4 years since I last saw the speakers. I have a Pioneer
KEH-M5000QR deck and the Pioneer EQ-6000 in the dash. (Had to go to the
car to double check.) A Pioneer GM-H22 amp running the front speakers,
a 2nd. GM-H22 running the rear speakers and a Pioneer GM-H200 amp
running the Pioneer subwoofer. This stereo has been in the car almost
9 years now. Everything works great. There is some clipping in the
rear speakers at the higher volumes, but this is probably due to age.

I rarely drive the car anymore though. I hope to start a KITT
conversion on this car some time in the future. Don't ask why. Long
story. Here are some links to 4 x 6 speakers.

To be quite honest your not going to tell a whole lot of difference between
4s or 4x6s! As for speaker choices, well that depends on how much you want
to spend. Small speakers believe it or not can get pretty pricey. If your
looking for some high end speakers go for some MB Quart or Infinity has been
the choice for most cambird owners from what I've been reading lately!
Kenwood makes a good set of 4x6s and so does Boston Acoustics! Do some
searching I'm sure you'll come up with something that will fit your needs!

Word of advice. Make sure that the speaker you buy have plastic cones, not
paper. And also make sure the sounds are UV resistant. The dash speaker
take a beating from the sun, especially with the black dashboard. One last
thing, get s set of Bass Blockers, they cost about $4. They block out the
low frequencies, that 4 and 4X6 speakers cannot produce. It will reduce the
chance of blowing your speakers, and keep your dask from rattling at higher
volumes.

You would also want them to be rubber would you not? I haven't seen a set of
foam UV resistant ones last...

There are also speakers that have UV resistant cloth like material that
lasts. There are a width variety of options.

You can fit 6.5"s in the dash when you unbolt the tray. They easily
outperform 4" or 4X6es. Pioneer and Kenwood are good, but look into
Kicker, Rockford Fosgate, Infinity and Blaupunkt.

Maybe the Firebirds don't have this tray. I know that Camaros have a
removable tray that holds the stock 4X6 speaker.

You remove the tray altogether and simply put a 6.5" in place.

All of this advice is great, but maybe we should elaborate on Bass
Blockers for him....

What 95Camaro is referring to are properly known as crossovers. They
come in a wide variety of formats, but in your instance you'd be
interested in a simple in-line electrolytic capacitor. This in effect
filters out lower frequencies so that a poor little 4x6 that can't go
any lower than say 500 hz isn't attempting to play subbass stuff in the
double-digits.

Simply running a properly-rated capacitor in-line with the positive lead
of each speaker will GREATLY reduce the stress on the speaker...but as
with anything, there is no free lunch...you'll lose some power going
through the cap.

Armed with sound advice, you can approach a stereo shop who should
easily be able to match your speaker choice with the appropriately rated
capacitor.

Take care!

So what do you do...leave the speaker to slap around inside the dash?
I've fabricated replacement trays to hold larger speakers, but you need
to use drivers with limited depth requirements...there sin't a lot of
room in there...

The speaker needs to be securely fastened.

Oh, and larger, higher-quality drivers such as those you mention will
NOT perform well in this application. They need to be in a sealed
chamber of some sort (doors, rear parcel shelves and sealed kicks work
very well)...the front of the speaker MUST be isolated from the rear of
the speaker for them to work properly...in the dash of a cambird, this
is not possible, and the money/ass-pain it is to make it fit is wasted
on lackluster performance.

I wonder how my Polk Audio 5 1/4" coax will do in the the dash, until I can
get around to putting them in the doors?

Another popular option is a 4x6 plate that has a 4" mid sitting BESIDE a 1"
tweet.
Infinity Kappa 462.1cf
Alpine SPS-4629P
Boston Acoustics 746
Clarion SRC4653
Just to name a few, the main advantage with these is that when the tweet is
not mounted in front of the mid, you will get a little more output from the
mid. Also gives a slightly better mounting depth, and of course should
mount into stock location with NO TROUBLE.
