I believe the system is 200 RMS (not sure), but rather than one single
amp, there are many amps located throughout the system.

I've got a five-speaker system in my wife's Mazda Millenia that sounds
really quite nice right from the factory. Good bass, nothing boomy
though.
I'm sure the wattage rating is peak also.

Phil,
The peak number is always higher than the RMS number, and most people are
impressed by big numbers, so 200W is probably peak. Besides, that is about
140W RMS, which is respectable for a car stereo system.
Next, with that much power in a factory system, it is probably the Delco-Bose
system that you are referring. I have seen older ('85) Corvette systems that
have an individual amp mounted to each speaker. These systems are designed
and tuned specifically for the installation and don't respond very well to
additions/modifications.
The D-B system is respectable. Take a listen to one before you buy. If it
satisfies your taste, go for it. Otherwise, go for the lowest/cheapest
option and replace it with aftermarket.
Personally, I haven't been in the new car market with options of decent
stereo systems, so I have quite a bit of experience installing aftermarket
stereos.
Actually, it isn't the Bose system any more. I don't know why, but it is
just a 'premium' delco system. I looked under the grills on a '97 the
other day, just to see who makes the speakers and there was no name on
them. The speakers in my '96 Camaro say Bose on them.

The '97 Camaro does not have the delco-bose anymore. It's replaced with
the 'audessey' made by delco. I have listened to both the '97 200W
audessey as well as the 500W delco-bose in the '96 Camaro, the
96 delco bose is much better.
I'm told the audessey only has one amp and it's in the head unit while
the delco-bose has individual amps in every speaker. Also, in '95
the delco bose got 5 speakers, where earlier models (93,94) only had
3. The 5 speaker is noticably better than the 3 speaker.
The 5 speakers are: 2 in the front doors, 2 in the backseat, 1
subwoofer in the trunk.

500W. I remember reading up on the Delco-Bose system, and it was rated
at 300W. The Mustang Mach 460 sound system outperforms by far the
f-bods' and that (as the name implies is 460W).

You may be right. Or we may both be right. There are alot of ways to
measure power. peak music, RMS, DIN etc. Anyway, In my opinion the
'95-96 bose CD 5 speaker system outperforms the '97 CD delco.

I think in the 95-96 Delco-Bose set-up, it goes like this:
front doors: 6.5"S Full-Range Speakers with integral 25-WATT amps,
rear panels: 6.5"S Woofers with integral 100-WATT amps
and in the hatch, the rear sound with 50-watt amp, no stereo separation.
It's a 300-WATT system.
And I must admit, it sounds better than the 97+ 200 WATT system.
