I have an '87 Trans Am with 4 speed auto trans (700 R4).

I need to change the tranny fluid and filter soon, and
I was wondering if I could use Dexron III instead of
Dexron II. Are these two fluids compatible? If so
what are the pros and cons of Dexron III when used
with an older (not to mention high milage) tranny.

Thanks for your time,

Jason

I just changed my wife's trans and used AC Dexron III but the dipstick
stated to use Dexron II. If you look on the back of the Dexron III quart,
it states this trans oil is compatiblie with all GM transmission's build
since 1967. I would say it is compatible. I do not even think you can buy
Dexron II anymore at part store.

Dont worry Jason, They are compatible, III is just an improvement over
II. Incompatible tranny fluid u need to watch out for is using Type-F
where dexron/mercon is called for or vise versa. I hope that helps.

Great stuff. I'll use the Dexron III, then.

Thanks for all the replies.

Actually, running type-F isn't exactly always a boo-boo either. The
clutch pack friction material in ford trannys isn't quite as hard/grabby
as that of GM therefore they use a atf with very little friction
modifiers, where as any Dextron/Mercron is a little slipperier. Therefore
if you have any interest in crispening up your shifts, type-F is actually
a pretty good choice. I believe this is also the basis for most of your
B&M trick shift, ect.

I'm familiar with that concept, too. But I'm more worried about causing
him warranty problems if something were to happen while using the wrong
specified fluid
