The first year would be 1973, which was an option. From 1970-72, that
eagle was on the nose, I believe.

actually i believe its supposed to be a phoenix, the mythological "firebird"
that would be reborn from its own ashes everyday ,something like that , i cant
remember my greek mythology,i dont know when they first appeared on firebirds
,somewhere around 74 i think,ah ha ! according to websters the phoenix is
actually egyptian mythology ,a beautiful lone bird which lived in the arabian
desert for 500 years then consumed itself in fire ,rising renewed from the
ashes to start another long life,it is used as a symbol of immortallity, there
you learn something every day!

Actually, the PHOENIX is the bird that recreates itself from its ashes, I don't
know if the firebird was a variant of that, but I've heard that the firebird is
an indian legend that stood for youth, strength and vitality, and freedom.
Makes sense, as the whole pony car market originally was intended for such
individuals.

It could be this too..anyone have any comments? it would be interesting to know
what the intent was back then.

both of those meanings are the same. in all mythology including current
religion (and this is not meant to spark a religious discussion or war of
any kind), the trend is toward long life and youthfulness... but the imagery
of emerging from the flames reborn is a symbol of life after death, or more
symbolically, as getting back up when you are knocked down. pretty much. i
wasnt into egyptian mythology, i was into greek myth, which are variations
of each other, just names changed and places, but the basic stories are the
same... there is a phoenix in greek as well. i think it belonged to a god
or something.

its late right now, so i might just be dreaming all this up.

1970 to 1972 had a small bird on the nose and 1973 to 1981 had the large
bird on the hood.

Correct. The 1970, 71, & 72 T/A's had a small bird on the nose the same
width as the stripe that ran all the way to the back of the car. A Blue
bird on White cars, a White bird on Blue cars.

I seem to remember something about an optional full size bird on the
72's as well but I could be mistaken about that part.

In '73 the full size (over the whole hood) were available and used until
1981 although there were two different varieties used.

I'm assuming that is a typo and you mean "on old 70's t/a"??

The Trans Am wasn't released until 1969, and they didn't have a bird on
the hood at all.

said trans am on the fin in back... and if i remember right (i only saw it
once, cause i only knew her for one night), it was brown and i think it had
the gold bird on it, and on the side qp pillars... all i remember is it was
loud and a lot wider than my 75 fb. but thinking back to it, i cant even
remember if it had the one scoop (with a hole in the hood, not bolted on the
hood) or if it had the ram air scoops. as for the bird, i cant remember...
now, im not sure of how all the model years looked, but if there was a 'bird
in the early part of the 70's (like 70 - 72) that had the protruding nose
and recessed headlamps, it may have been one of those years...

OK, maybe to help clear up a little of this confusion (and because I
am older than dirt, and remember the progression firsthand, and owned
7 of them throughout the years),

The Poncho T/A was officially released late in 1969 (known as serious
Poncho lovers as a 69 1/2 model) there were less than 1000 released,
with a true Ram-Air Induction hood, with lots of tricks, like a
Dzus(sp?) fastner which held up the cleaner element inside the hood
itself (shut the hood and the cleaner mated to the bottom of the air
cleaner bowl fastened to the carb via a foam rubber seal).

Anyway, The first T/A to sport any bird emblems commercially was the
1971, which had the small 2" bird behind the door jams, and a small 1
1/2" bird at the center point of the nose of the hood, about one inch
up. The 1972 was similar. The 1973 was the first year that a larger
bird was offered, however, it was only a 17" bird, and narrower than
the later offerings.

The first 'True' bird came into being in 1975, also known as the 21"
bird, or 'Tri-Colored Bird' (Prior to 1975, the birds were all one
color, black, and tracings only) the 1975 bird was a full 3-colors,
Black, Red, and clear (which let the car's paint show through).

The bird stayed the same for 1976, 1977 (excluding Bandits, which had
a special effect panel added to the outside of the wings, which made
the wingspan almost 4" wider) 1978 (continued the Bandit tradition),
and 1979. In late 1979 the bird changed format slightly, with more
vivid feathers, and in mid 1980, Pontiac released the 'Special Edition
Trans Am', which had a totally unique bird, which had a shaded top
(ALL Special Ed. T/A's were Silver on Dark Silver, with a black, gold
and gray bird). This served as the tenth-year edition.

1980-81 Turbo T/A's had a totally unique bird, due to the turbo scoop,
and in 1982, the bird was totally revamped (due to the total redesign
of the car. The bird was made 3" taller, and 3.5" narrower, due to
hood limitations. Excluding the 80-81 turbo T/A, this was also the
first year that the T/A was NOT offered with a shaker hood.

Most know the later history of the 1983 - 99 T/A's, so I hope the OLD
history on T/A's help those in question...

By the way, I owned a rather wicked 1975 H.O T/A with a 455 4-speed
factory, and after a little (TLC), the car eased into the 13's in the
quarter mile at 105.27 MPH....

****The tenth year anniversary car was 1979, not 1980. I think the bird colors
were red, grey, and clear for the Y89 tenth anniversary edition. 1980 had two
special edtions, a Pace Car and a Black Special edition. 1981 had the black
s/e and the Nascar edition. 1979 had the black s/e and the tenth anniversary.
1978 had both the Gold S/e and the Black s/e, while 1977 had the black s/e
only....whew...76 was a black s/e, with some being 50th ann. cars (not 100%
sure here)

The hood decal for the black s/e cars is the same from 1976 to 1978 only, GM
part number 547045. 1979 is different, part number 10002974.

Also, 1981 decals are 2 color, not five. within the gold series of birds, 1981
saw 2 designs, the second being darker in color than the first.

Also the term "special edition" dates back to 1976, with the release of the
50th anniversary edition. From 1976-81, there was the "bandit edition" trans
am (commonly called as such, but it is really a Black Special Edition).

hope this is all helpful!!

Well, this sounds good from a collectors book, however, I
personally (not saying that I'm infallable) but I've owned one, seen
dozens of others, and have yet to see a production date on the
manufacturer's plate earlier than 11/79. This indicates a 1980
model to GM. This makes sense, since the first Trans-Am's were
only ran for a small part of the last of 1969 model year. There was
actually a debate over making one at all, if I remember right,
because of the oil shortage and recession at the time. The olds
403 engine that came in ALL of them was a serious gas guzzler,
hurt Pontiac's 'just started' EPA fleet regs., and did not sell well
due to its 'outrageous' $10,000+ price tag. Oh, and most came
with either 3.73:1 or 4.11:1 rear gears, and a 350 THM tranny.

I think the bird colors
> were red, grey, and clear for the Y89 tenth anniversary edition.

They were red, dark gray, and darker gray (almost black).

1980 had two
> special edtions, a Pace Car and a Black Special edition.

They were the Pace Car and the 'Black-Out' Edition, which
included special tail light bezels' Neither were identified as THE
Special Edition...they were A special edition version. Actually, the
Gray Special Edition's proper name was, the Pontiac 10th
Aniversary Special Edition Trans-Am.

1981 had the black

You lost me on that...The biggest misconception was the 1978
being THE Bandit edition. The first 'Bandit Edition' was the 1977,
which had the Hurst 'Small T-Tops'....(If you never saw one, it is
doubtful that you will now...they are rare). Pontiac continued the
small-T-Tops for two years, 77-78. after that, they were discarded
for the full-roof T's. (More glass, more $$$)

The 1976 is a transitional year, and remembering seeing them new
on the showroom floor, remember seeing different shape birds on
them...a problem with changing birds before a production run end.

>
> Also, 1981 decals are 2 color, not five.

I never claimed 5 colors on ANY bird. They were two on dark
colors, however, I do remember seeing the Black, red and clear
(paint visible through them) birds on the 1981's. The gold series
birds started in 81, predominantly on brown and black cars, due to
the accent effect on darker colors. Like any car part listed by
numbers, manufacturers often change part numbers after a year's
end (A severe problem I have personally encountered when trying
to get interior panel colors to MATCH UP during a restoration!!!)
Nothing more infurating than not finding a true match, yet having
the manufacturer tell me that it is the exact same color...

>
> Also the term "special edition" dates back to 1976, with the release of the

Well, again...we covered that. There is A Special Edition and then
there is The Special Edition....

From 1976-81, there was the "bandit edition" trans
> am (commonly called as such, but it is really a Black Special Edition).

Uhhhh....well, now....its kinda hard to have a Bandit edition TA in
76, when the Bandit didn't hit the roads till the late summer of 1977
(by the way, I met Burt Reynolds in Bell Buckle Tennessee during
some filming, where a small clip of the later movie chase scenes
were filmed for the first Bandit (Intersection of Bell Buckle Road and
SR 231N)...This was before Tennessee even had a film comission, and
therefore no credit was given to it)....so how is that 76-81 is a
given date here? Don't believe everything you read.

Hope this is more accurate...

1969 was the first year of the TransAm and it had the small eagle in front of the hood. The small eagle lasted from 1969 till 1972. The full hood bird almost didn't happen, GM was afraid it wouldn't sell. In 1973 the first full hood bird was born. The car gradually became more popular. In 1977 the movie, Smoke and the Bandit came out. The sales of the TransAm skyrocketed. This badass car became well known the world over and is still loved to this day.

It was never an eagle or a Falcon. It's actually no specific species at all.
