Did you check the coil wire out thoroughly for corrosion? Same symptoms,
cheap fix. If it's good, then I would suspect the Optispark.

The 96-97 Opti-spark is a better design. It has a vacuum tube that evacuates
the moisture and helps keep it dry. Can you see a trail of old antifreeze
coming out of the water pump weep hole? If there is any leaking at all, it
ruins the Opti-spark instantly. The weep hole is a little hard to see, so
you have to crawl under the car to find it. If there is/has been any leaks,
replace the water pump. It has to come off anyhow to get to the offending
part. Just for grins, check the coil and connections and the plug wires.
This may lead you to the cause of the problems. It would be cheaper than the
Opti-spark.

Googs, it's the opti that is gone, sure enough, the intermittant rough
running is a dead sure sign, well known in vette circles...

get one off the new, some buick/olds dealer has them for cheap, like 200 bucks
new GM......

pain in the ass to change, might as well do a nice new water pump too....

and the plug wires,.....and the plugs....

I think it can reasonable stop there, we will not need a shortblock...:-)))

Not True. The water pump went on my 94 and started dripping coolant on the
OptiSpark as well as the serpentine belt. I got it fixed a few days later
with no harm done to the Opti. They aren't quite as fragile as some people
would lead you to believe.

You were just lucky. I've done three Opt-Spark jobs in the last two months
that were the result of coolant getting into them. One of them was not from
a leak, but when the anti-freeze was changed and it soaked it. When he
changed thermostats, it ran down on to it. Water pump was not leaking yet,
but put a new one on anyhow just for preventive maintenance. By the way, I
don't do it to make money either, just as a favor for some people, and the
fact that I enjoy it. My labor was free. Just bring a lot of Coronas for
afterwards. One guy from Springhill, Ks. even remembered the limes. His was
the one that was ruined from the anti-freeze change.

For afterwards? You mean to tell me you don't get thirsty *during* the
operation? ;)
