Is there any difference between the IROC and the Z28 besides the 16 inch
wheels and decals? Thanks

I think that there is, but its the engine. I believe the IROC's is an HO an
the Z28 is normal or LO or something like that. I go to this site for Camaro
info, www.camarosource.ca

Not sure, but slightly different suspension setup too?

with them back in the middle to late 80s?

International Race Of Champions.

All cars are prepped the same, only difference other than driver, is the
color.
It boils down to lots of luck, and driver skill.

The Camaro, was not the only car used for it, as the Firebird has been used,
as has a couple of Mopars.

Yup, stiffer Delco-Bilstein shocks, stiffer steering and different
alignment. I think it is lowered too but I can't find a quote just
now.

There is a *lot* of information here:

Thanks a lot everyone that camarosource.com was helpful. I have a 86 z28
with the 305 tpi loaded to the gills with options. I bought it 5 years ago
and sold it 3 years ago and kicked myself in the ass ever since I just now
bought it back from the guy i sold it to. Cant wait till spring.

Didn't they use the late 80's Daytona once?

Yup, the ex had one that she bought right under my nose while we were
getting a divorce at the dealer I worked at...it was a huge place, bigger
now, but wont forget the day she came in for service, the salesman came
running out, and said...I got this young lady that you will know, but I dont
want any trouble, and I dont want you upset at me....
White, with the burgandy cloth...red IROC slash decal on it....
What that salesman didnt know, was that was the start of the best year of my
life...LOL....payback was sooooo much fun...
(payback being she was fucking this guy, while we were married, and RIGHT
after the divorce, she married him...well....lets say, he didnt like what
happened for the next 14 months, and the best part was, I told him it would
happen..might not be me..but it was sooo much better that it was.)

Yes. I own an '85 Z-28 TPI. I wanted an IROC but couldn't find a clean one in
my price range. 1985 was the first year for IROCs, as well as the TPI engine.

Here are the differences:

16" wheels, 245/50VR-16 Goodyear Gatorbacks (quite novel to have a
unidirectional tire back then)

Fog lamps

"Camaro" on front license plate panel

.5" (1/2") lower ride height

Body-colored valances (Mine are a different color)

Delco-Bilstein rear gas shocks

Special front struts

Increased spring rates

Special jounce bumpers

5 degrees of caster (up from 3.5 degrees on Z-28)

Wonderbar front frame rail stiffener

Special valving in steering for increased steering effort (I thought mine had
pretty high effort.)

Larger rear stabilizer (anti-roll) bar with stiffer bushings

Exterior decals, interior badge, thinner two-color lower body stripe.

The same engines were available in both the Z-28 and the IROC. TPI info: 1985
was the only year the automatic tranny had the hotter cam. In '86 it was
detuned 25 HP, down to 190 from 215. A manual became available with TPI in
'87, and it got the hotter cam back, but the autos still had the milder cam.
In all subsequent years only the manual tranny had the hot cam. You can tell a
hot-cam car (aside from transmission) by the redline being at 5500. Milder
auto cam engines redlined at 5000.

When buying tires I'm not upset to have 15-inchers. I can get a set of BFGs
for under $300. Plus it rides a little better than an IROC would. Would I
rather have an IROC? You betcha.

Incidentally, the IROC racing series originally used Porsche 911s. That was
interesting, watching those NASCAR guys try and learn how to drive a race car
with all the weight in back.

Yup, and the original cars were Porsche 911's, I believe.

I forget what they run now...the last cars were barely more Firebirds than a
NASCAR Monte Carlo is a Monte Carlo...small wonder that the NASCAR boys tend
to win that series these days.

They're running 'birds again this year. (I think they don't
have a sponsor willing to put up the $$$.)

At least the powertrain is close - RWD V8 - to a real firebird.
Ain't seen no MonteCarslow with a V8 for a while. ;)

Heya, been awhile since I posted here:

Introduced in 85', the IROC orignally came with a 305 TPI angine. It
featured a sportier suspension, and bigger rims than the Z28. The base
engine in the Z28 was the LG4 305. This had a computer controled quadrajet
carb, and was finally let go in 88'. BTW, Chevy High Performance has a
series "My Generation Camaro" that features an LG4 Z28. The step up to the
higher peformance Z28 would have an L69 305HO, denoted by having a dual
snorkel intake and the lettering on top of the aircleaner "305 H.O." The
IROC was an option on the Z28 up until it was dropped in 88', from then
there was only IROC cars until 90', when GM left IROC again.

Actually, I read at www.nastyz28.com a while back that the Camaros were used
in the International Race of Champions in the mid '70s. And I think the
Camaro won a few times too!

Go check it out because I'm not 100% sure.

Actually, the camaro would have to win. Because they all were using the
same car to keep things equal. It was the racing persons who were
champions. e.g. Andretti, Fitapaldi, Gordon, etc. They would race several
events that would simulate F-1, nascar and a few other events using the same
cars and tally points at the end. the winner would have the most points, et
all. In the latter years, they began to use icky porches for the event.
