This is a repost, it never showed up on my server after I originally posted it.

Looks like the guys at Ford know what's up GM's sleeve. Apparently GM is planning a 6.0 liter engine in a new Camaro. They are already designing their new Cobra with a super charger in order to compete.

Here is the quote -

BlueOvalNews: From the competitive side through, Camaro is really working over
the Mustang. Is this the stop gap?

Team Mustang member: For many years marketing would always tell us to be
just as fast as the Camaro. Just as fast. And that would infuriate a lot of us
because we're forced to market the Mustang at a moving target. We know that
the Camaro has close to 350 horsepower TODAY. So we've been given the
green light to match that in 2003. The only problem is that the Camaro is
expected to get bumped to 375 horsepower. So we're chasing a moving target
here. Of course that wasn't always the way it was - we really had the upper hand
in the 1980's and most of the 1990's. What people don't understand is how far
we've come since 1986. 225 horsepower was a lot back then, today it's
laughable. But there's more to performance than just horsepower. The Camaro's
suspension geometry is better. The gearing is tailored different. 2003 will be a
good year for the Mustang (grins and smiles).

BlueOvalNews: Are we in the beginning of a horsepower race?

Team Mustang member: GM is because it's all they have. But we can't win that
kind of race with what we have. The 4.6L can rev high. We can get the 4.6L to rev
even higher, but let's face the fact that the engine's lower end is the holy stop
gate. And that holy stop gate says - gee you can get the 4.6L to rev higher and
you can certainly get the 4.6L to generate even more horsepower, but at what
kind of reliability? What we do not need are failure fatigued 4.6L 4V's running
around like ticking bombs. We're really reaching the pinnacle of horsepower and
acceptable durability performance levels with the 4.6L. On the other hand, GM's
using a 5.7L and they are planning on going to a 6.0L in 2003/2004. The only way
the Mustang can compete is to increase the size of the engine. We're doing that
in 2003. What enthusiasts shouldn't push manufacturers for is a horsepower
race. Because you're eventually going to flash back to 1973 when the walls came
crashing down and we ended up with a 90 horsepower 302 in 1974.

BlueOvalNews: Do you feel the 2003 Charger or 2003 Camaro could dampen the
 Mustang's sales future?

Team Mustang member: No. We've got something no one else does - those 7
letters - MUSTANG. We've been the segment leader since 1965 and we'd really
have to screw up big to lose that edge. The Mustang has a cult following that no
other car in its segment does.

Check it out here -

6.0L sounds like a sweet set up. Maybe GM is learning something from
Lingenfelters Strokers?
As far as the Mustang competing with a 375 HP F-body all I could say is, I
got to see it.
The way it goes now even a supercharged GT has a tuff time competing. I just
got to see how ford plans on squeezing 375 HP from a 4.6L without going
BOOM.
Maybe Ford will do what it had been doing for so many years with the
Mustang. Just TELL the people it has 375HP and the Cult like Mustangers will
simply buy & believe it.
Most 16 year old girls that get Mustangs for their Birthday couldn't tell
240 HP from 375 HP anyway.

BTW.... I wonder what Insurance companies are going to charge to insure a
375 HP $25,000+ F-body?

Hearing that the day could come where a camaro could roll off the floor with
a 6 litre would be sweet

I apparently missed out on the rest of the thread before your post, so I was
wondering if you could tell me where I can find more information on this
future f-body. I am really considering ordering a 2002 since that is
"supposed" to be the last model, but if they are going to come out with a
better and badder sp? model in a few more, I guess I can wait....Thanks,

Nathan

Aren't they lucky!

I couldn't manage more than a 3 or a 4 banger, even when I was 16.
Shoulda stopped smoking and started working out, and maybe I
shouldn't have left my girlfriend at that time - what a mistake to make,
and it only took 20 years to work out !!!

i had a 86 hyundai stellar when i was 16, the block was cracked and so it
leaked out all its oil within 3 days...indestructible car though. I got it
stuck in the ditch, broke off the muffler, ran over mail boxes, climbed over
a cement median..went 4 wheeling...every 16 year old needs a shit box to bag
on. after a few years we tend to smarten up...most of the time :)

You and I are on the same mark... next year I was planning on either getting
the "last year" Z or a Trans Am... (still have not decided that one yet) but
if they roll out with 375 RIGHT OFF THE DAMN LOT... that Trans am thought
just flew right out the window :-)

From the time that I was 12 till 18 I drove a 1973 Cadillac Sedan Deville,
talk about an indestructible car! But.... I recall one night that we got 17
girls in that car... that was a night to remember... we piled out like them
damn clowns you see at the circus, then when I popped the truck and 4 more
came out.... LMAO. (do not ask me what I was doing with 17 girls LOL)

Yes, sounds very sweet. Now if they'd create a decent body to put it in
they'd be in business.

That's the way most of us Mustang owners feel too. I'll believe it when I
see it.

Read the article again. It isn't going to be a 4.6L. Something bigger. It
won't be the 5.4L though. Here's the whole article if you want to read it:

That happened one year. The 99 Cobra. That definitely didn't happen during
the late 80's/early 90's when 5.0's were beating up 5.7L Camaros.

That's why they buy the V6 models.

I really don't want to know.

Maybe just a stroked 4.6L. Motor Trend had an article on Ford's two
"Super Cobra" test cars, one with the sc'ed 5.4, and the other with a
built-up DOHC 4.6. The 5.4 rated at 360hp, and the 4.6 rated at 380hp.
Or maybe they'll just put that V10 engine in there. ...yah. 80% of the
article is probably just bs anyway.

I may be wrong, but I thought Chevrolet didn't put 5.7's in their f-bodies
during the late 80's and early 90's....(not until 93 when they put the LT-1
in.....)

GM put them up to 1981 in the Chevy F body. Then, it took a hiatus until 1987
when the 350 vin code 8 "L98" was used. Then, both divisions had it to 1992.
(the vin 8 motor) Now, from 1993 to the present the V8 option is only the 350
engine. From 87 to 92, the V8 could have been either a 305 or a 350.

Could be, but the largest you can stroke one is to 331ci, which is still far
from 350. I think it will be a completely new motor. Personally, I'd like
to see a SOHC-DOHC 351 used.

BON is a pretty reputable source. Ford could have given the reporter some
BS answers though. Only time will tell.
