Heyas.

I've got a 95 M3 with 75k miles. Over the last 10k miles, I've had a mildly
intermittant problem with my driver's side window which has now become a
permanent problem. The window rolls down just fine, but when rolling it up (just
holding down the button) it will stop and roll down a little bit when it's 1/3rd
of the way up. I can tap the button and inch it past this point, but it will stop
and do the same thing when it is 2/3rds of the way up.

Anyone experienced this problem before? Common problem? Tips? Repair costs?

PS - can anyone recommend a good 3rd party shop for replacement OEM parts? I'm
going to be replacing quite a few suspension and brake bits soon and I hate to pay
dealer prices for everything. Heh.

I had the same problem on a '94 E36, and the BMW repair guys kept trying to say
it must be 'Coke spilled on the button'. I basically had to wait until it no
longer went up at all (on a rainy day, no less), and then it was repaired under
warranty. I suspected a design problem, and your case more or less confirms
this. I would think that given the symptoms, it wouldn't be hard to find the
source - maybe the pressure sensing switch that keeps the window from rolling up
on your child's head is malfunctioning.

Good luck in pressing your case, and don't let them tell you it's the button!

Problems associated with the E36 power windows seem to be common, according
to frequent comments in the mailing lists. The driver's side window is
usually the issue, probably because of its frequent usage when compared to
the other windows. List members have reported that the internal plastic
positioning slides can break due to inadequate lubrication. My window is
starting to exhibit similar "sticking" and slow roll-ups, and I'm planning
on replacing the slides and grease when the door trim is removed for a
speaker upgrade in a couple months.

Hi,

I've got a '95 E36-320i coupe and experienced the same problem a year ago.
My dealer could only solve the problem by replacing the window-motor.
Lubricants etc. did not do the job.

Since then i haven't had a single problem with my power window.
Hope this will solve your problem.

Rob.

Jake,

No $$ that this will fix it, but it's worth a go.

Start the car with the window rolled all the way up
press down on the switch to roll the window down and hold the switch there
for 5-6 seconds (not much more, no less) after the window is all the way
down.
Repeat the above step in the up direction

This resets the pinch protection feature of your car. It may work (and it
may not). I'll be digging into my passenger window since it's doing the same
thing and the above did not resolve it permanently (worked at first).

Good luck
