Hi,

Is it possible to get a glass sunroof to replace the factory fitted
steel one?

Would it be BMW OEM? or a differant manufacture?

TIA

It's very possible, another BMW owner on another digest bought one
and started installation.Found the sunroof tracks are different, other
parts needed,etc.etc.ended up having his current ones machined, and some
other problems. He loves the new roof, but the cost and effort were
horrendous.Unless you have lots of time and money to spend,it's not a
good idea.

There was a factory glass moonroof option available in the
late 80's, but i don't believe any more are available. I've
tried to find one through various BMW dealers but there's
no listing, and it's not on my BMW Parts CD.

However, there's one or two guys on the E30 Message Board
who have this glass moonroof in their E30, one of which was
located at a dealer, bought, and installed a few years ago.
I believe the other guy's was in the car when he bought it
used. I've even heard of a few E30 M3's that had the
factory moonroof. It must be pretty rare !

That reminds me...at the old Quick Lube shop I used to work at I saw a moonroof
on a 1989 325i. I asked him about it and he said it was factory. Indeed a rare
option, but very nice.

I am based in Ireland.

Thanks for the replys.

When you guys say moon roof what do you mean?

Is it just a differant way of saying sunroof (ie manufactures
discription etc?

Or is it one of those roofs that only tilts up anddoes not slide open?

TIA

It's a sunroof, only it's made of glass instead of metal...you can see the
moon through it at night...

The term "moon roof" seems to have appeared in the mid 70's
(in the USA) to differentiate the glass sunroof from the more
conventional steel sunroof. Something about you open the
steel sunroof during the day, but at night when it's chilly a
glass moonroof can stay closed and still let the moonlight
(or streetlight) in.

You'll probably hear arguements about it, but the majority of
reasonable people will call the steel roof a "sunroof", and call
the glass panel a "moonroof". This is how it should be.

From what i understand about the E30 glass moonroof,
it slides and tilts just like the steel sunroof, only it's made
of glass.

Sounds like a market for someone who wants to manufacture an aftermarket
kit...
