I just bought an 88 528e and I would like to replace the factory
speakers. The radio has been replace with a Sony cd player. What I need
to know is what are the three wires connected to the speakers are. One on
the wires is tied into another wire. Any help is appreciated.

If your car originally had the BMW 'anti-theft' radio, then the three wires
you refer to represent left speaker high, right speaker high and speaker
common which is connected to radio chassis ground. Be careful connecting an
aftermarket receiver, because the grounded speaker common can damage the
output of some units. To be safe, you should get an interface converter
which will protect your new receiver. These are available at auto stereo
stores. The other choice is to run new wires to your speakers. If you have
the BMW plate speakers on the rear parcel shelf, then you also have an
amplifier mounted in the trunk below the shelf. Keep that in mind if you
decide to run new wires.

Run all new wires!! a new head unit threw the factory amp will SUCK! bc it
its being amplififed twice. Or if your good with wires, you can find the
wires that goto the factory amp from the speakers and replace it with a nice
aftermarket one. replaced the amp and compenet sets in my e32. sounds
awesome! and they are all 5 1/4 componet sets.

OK, where is the amp, and how difficult is it to replace.

In mine it was in the trunk, on the left hand side behind the carpet. mine
is a e32, so i can tell you much. but if you can figure out the wiring, take
each speaker out and look at the colors of the wires, then take the factory
amp and cut those wires and hook them up to the output of your new amp.
Also for a good price the infinity refrence speakers sound good. available
at circuit city. You will have to run rca cables and a "remote turn on"
from the head unit (cd player) to the amp. Also you will have to run a
power and groung wires. with new speakers, your car will sound great.
You could have all this done profesionally but it will cost you alot more.

He's already replacing the head unit, I told him to add a amp to the head
unit. Also the 35 watts is max, not rms, your amp produces only about 17
watts, and not nearly as clean as a amp. So the 35 watts max is not more
watts than your stock stereo. Depending on your drivers im suprised you run
them off the head unit. Go with a 12" sub as well. More bass. You can do
all this for under $1000 and do the work yourslef.
