Okay...here's one I'm hoping someone can answer...My OBC does display
data, but very dimly. Today I spent several hours replacing the light
bulb and the light bar on the OBC. Still no bright display. While
looking it over, I noticed that there is a yellow wire coming off of the
OBC that has a male adapter attached to the end. It was (and is) not
connected to anything. My guess is that this powers the lights for the
computer (although not the computer itself, since that is working,
albeit rather dimly.) Does anyone know if this is correct? And if
so...where is the female end that it connects to?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Could it be the difference between night and daytime driving? In otherwords
maybe it things your lights are switched on and therfore dims the display?

I can not tell you which connection this is but it might give you a direction to
search.

Cheers

I had the same problem with my 84 325e. It so happened that the speedo
stopped working at the same time and also the cruise control quit. I fixed
them and the light worked again.
I fixed them by resoldering all the soldered joints on the instrument panel as
sometimes I could make everything work by banging on the dash. Clearly
there is a connection between the two items which may also be your problem.
Good luck Steve

I replace my dash last year and had all wires connected except for the
yellow wire that you speak of. After several minutes and not being able
to find a place to connect this wire, I delved into my manuals for about
two hours. Then I found one little sentence that said, “yellow wire is
not used.”
As for your light not working, there could be a short that is blowing
the light out, have you pulled the new light bar out and looked at the
filaments with a magnifying glass to make sure that it is still good?

For all those who offered help (and those in the same situation) here's what
finally fixed my OBC light problem. It was NOT the light bar (as apparently
is the problem with most people's). After countless hours of labor, I
accidentally solved my problem by wiggling the connector to the instrument
panel. Presto! the light lit up. Bottom line, bad connection to the
instrument panel, which houses the circuit board. Figures...the easiest
thing is the right (and last) thing I try.
