Poor Starting E30 316i with M40 Engine

My Father has just bought a1991 E30 316i Coupe which runs fine apart from
poor cold starting in that the engine starts OK but dies as soon as any load
is applied. He leaves it to idle for a couple of mins. and then its OK.

I suspect a faulty coolant temperature sensor such that there is no fuel
enrichment at cold start. Does anyone else have any ideas or similar
experiences.

Second question: if it is the coolant temperature sensor can someone please
tel me where it is located on the M40 engine as I've looked with the aid of
the Haynes manual and I can't find it.

Final question am I correct in assuming this car has the Bosch Motronic fuel
injection system. I suspect so as being 1991 it is a very late E30 model

You may be right.

A pain. Both (one for the dash, one for the DME) are in the base of the
head under the intake manifold.

Yep, it's motronic.
