My 89 318iS has got a small brake fluid leak onto the carpet, it's just
below the master cylinder. Time for a new master cyl or a less drastic
fix?

I would be getting a new MC, and quick.

It could also be the cutch master cylinder. Either way, its
probably best to replace whichever master cylinder is leaking.
Rebuilding is a pain, and in the long run, will probably not
last as long as new.

This is MORE LIKELY the clutch master, as it is inside the car while the
brake master is not. New one's only about $65. Be aware that BOTH draw
fluid from the same reservoir, so if either system leaks, you need to add
'brake' fluid.

I think it's different on a right hand drive car. I have two fluid
reservoirs. The brake pedal pushes a bar that runs behind the centre
console as the servo is on the same side of the car as LHD models.

Fairly sure it's the brake fluid. I stuck a mat under it and have been
driving to work all week with no leaks.

I did a wee search and it seems an interesting idea to fit a slightly
larger diameter master. Trouble is the parts CD is very vague about what
I have now, is shows 17.5/20 and 22mm for my 318iS.

RHD? Well, yeah. You're probably right. Never seen one myself.

John,

What side of the car is the fluid leaking?

If it's leaking on the drivers side, it must be your clutch master because
your brake master is on the left hand side of the car, in the engine bay,
no?

The clutch master is attached to the clutch pedal, and inside the car, hence
the separate reservoir, on the right side of the engine bay.

If it is the brake master, how is it making it's way through the firewall?

UK passenger side.

On further investigation it looks like it might actually be the heater
control valve.
