Is BMW a German or British company? I always thought it was German.
Then someone told me it was British because BMW stands for British Motor
Works. Then I just seen that BWM stands for Bavarian Motor Works. So who
owns BMW? When was it sold?

Thanks

Fletcher O'Donta

it's neither. BMW is owned by GM and stands for Burlington Motor Works.

... and in English, Bayerische is translated to Bavarian, while Werke gets turned into Work(s),
hence we say Bavarian Motor Works.

in canada (more specifically quebec) where we speak english and french, on
the sticker inside the door on a new e46 it says Bayeriche Motoren Werke
(and the rest of the sticker is nglish/french)

that's the name of the company.

My '94 325i says that too. Inside the owners manual, it is translated.

Oh no - we just did the 500 post 'what does BMW stand for' thread only a
couple of months ago. Can't we just let it go at least for a year? :)

It's definitely very German. Majority shareholding is the German Quandt
family. HQ is Munich, Bavaria, Germany.

The British connection is that BMW owned Rover cars after British Aerospace
(now BAE SYSTEMS) sold it to them. BMW got in trouble with Rover and pulled
the plug on Rover by selling to a consortium called Phoenix. Land Rover was
sold to Ford. BMW retained the right however to market the Mini and
retained the Cowley plant near Oxford to build the new Mini which I believe
is due to be launched this year.

Hope this puts you in the picture.

Regards,

Martin Wildsmith.

off topic, but I thought BAE is former Marconi, not british aerospace?

Yes indeed, perhaps someone was thinking of BMC -- British Motor
Corporation. They make Austin Healey, MG, Riley, Morris, and Wolseley
(perhaps other makes too).

IIRC BMW aquired Riley along with Rover and didn/t sell it to FORD. In
fact I recall reading somewhere about plans to "revive" Riley brand
with a new model, a big 2-door sport coupe.

Ok. BMW IS German.

BMW means "Bayerische Motoren Werke".

1. In March 1916 a company called "Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG" was
found in Munich.
2. In July 1917 a Munich company called"Rapp Motorenwerke GmbH" was
renamed into "Bayerische Motoren-Werke GmbH". This company wanted to
make cars, aircrafts, bicycles, engines,...
3. in October 1917 the blue-white BMW-sign was registered, which can be
seen on every BMW car.
