They have never worked since I first bought the car a month ago. Once while
driving I went over a bump and they came on. Another time when I stopped at
night they came on as supposed to when I shut the engine off. Besides that,
they don't work when entering the car or when lifting up on the driver's
door handle.

Is there a module that has gone bad? Maybe some solder joints? Anyone else
experience this?

Thanks,

I just bought a used 1990 525i. I don't have interior lights either except the
ones above the vanity mirrors on both sides work. Fuses ok, new bulbs. What
next? Just experienced headlights failed when going over a bump the other
night. That was an adventure on a back road!

Sounds like you have what I just fixed on my E34.
LKM needs to be re-soldered as the problem will only get worse. There are
instructions at :

My module was hard to remove but it was just the fact that it's held in by
lots of pins and had never been out of the car. There was a dry joint in it
but I re-soldered them all while I had it out and no problems since.

There is a 3-positin switch that controls the interior lighting, I is off,
II is on with the doors open, III is on all the time. It sounds like you
have yours set to I. On my car, the I position is all of the way to the
left, II is in the center, and III is to the right. (I, II, and III are not
the real names of the switch positions, I just used them to differentiate
the positions.)

The lights didn't work on my 91' 525i E34 M50 because the plastic switch has
become melted slightly over time and doesn't work in the door operated
position (It's set to the left in my 525). If you press it slightly whilst
the door is open it should work, if you have the same problem I describe. I
temporarily fixed it by taking the plastic switch out and turning it round
180°. Unfortunately it's stopped working again - maybe because it's too hot
in there. I've been recommended to get a new switch but I guess they're not
that common these days.
