Is there a module that has gone bad? Maybe some solder joints? Anyone else
experience this?

Sounds like you have what I just fixed on my E34.
LKM needs to be re-soldered as the problem will only get worse. There are
instructions at :

My module was hard to remove but it was just the fact that it's held in by
lots of pins and had never been out of the car. There was a dry joint in it
but I re-soldered them all while I had it out and no problems since.
