My E36 M3 door open/closed sensor has become intermittent.
Consequently the dome light stays on and the window won't close fully.
Any help in locating the sensor, wiring etc. and tips or tricks for
fixing would be appreciated. It's probably relevant to note that I had
a scratch on the door repainted about 3 months ago and they had to
remove the door panel as part of the repair.

TIA, Alan

The front door sensor is on the front of the car body near the door
hinges. It's a simple push switch.

The E36 has a micro-switch either inside the latch on the door, or inside
the striker on the B pillar, depending on year and model variant.

You can adjust the microswith in or out to fix the problem. It is a
cheap fix at the shop (if there is such a thing). My 92 E36 did the
same thing. It took them about 3 times but they finally got it right.
Does yours come on during acceleration? MIne did. It was spooky...

Thanks to Bret I found the switch inside the striker plate on the B
pillar. It works just fine if I operate the switch by hand with the
door open. But 1 out of 2 times when I close the door the window stays
down then after a couple of minutes driving it will go up. Not related
to accelaration just motion. Any idea how the adjustment is made?

Adjustment is made only if the door is not lined up with the rear quarter.

You loosen the T30 Torx screws and move the striker plate out so that the
door latch pushes the switch further.

If the door is already correctly aligned, the problem is due to wear in or
on the switch and the striker needs to be replaced.

Good. Great. Thanks for that. Anything else you'd like to add while
we're here? Sure? I mean, it's only a whisker under 13 years ago since
this was a live thread, so I'd hate for anyone else to be held in
suspense for another decade waiting on what other pearls of wisdom
you've got.

The location of the Door Closed Switch is year-dependent. I do not know when
they moved it, but my '94 has the switch located on the door latch itself,
but later models have it on the striker that is mounted to the B-pillar.

If you cannot physically see the switch on the door pillar, then operate the
latch with a suitable tool while the door is open, and then over-travel the
latch to see if you can change the behavior of the window and dome light --
the dome light has a delay, but the window operates immediately. If you can
manipulate the door latch to change the behavior of the window, then the
switch is in the latch. You have to remove the door panel and take the latch
out from the inside of the door.
