I agree, I've managed to dent a couple rims and ruin some tires on my mom's
Volvo with 17" rims. Not a cheap problem to get out of! I was doing maybe 70
on the interstate and hit a medium size pothole. Shouldn't have caused
damage but it did. Tires were 205/45 ZR 17 P-Zeros. How you can ever drive
on anything bigger than 17" rims without smashing them to bits is beyond me.
I'll stick to the 15" rims and tires on my E36 thanks! :-)

I own a 1991 850i and I live in Washington, D.C. (Motto: "We never met a
pothole we didn't like.") So far (knock wood) I have been very fortunate
with my 235/50 x 16 setup. IMHO, the extra sidewall height vice the
lower-profile options has protected my super-trick *forged* alloy wheels
from damage.
Please pass along to other groups or friends wh can help.
