the problem is not with the wheels, but with the potholes.
it just cost me $345 for a new tire because of a pothole it kissed, and it
wasnt even that deep. the low profile tires dont do too well with them.

I agree, I've managed to dent a couple rims and ruin some tires on my mom's
Volvo with 17" rims. Not a cheap problem to get out of! I was doing maybe 70
on the interstate and hit a medium size pothole. Shouldn't have caused
damage but it did. Tires were 205/45 ZR 17 P-Zeros. How you can ever drive
on anything bigger than 17" rims without smashing them to bits is beyond me.
I'll stick to the 15" rims and tires on my E36 thanks! :-)

I own a 1991 850i and I live in Washington, D.C. (Motto: "We never met a
pothole we didn't like.") So far (knock wood) I have been very fortunate
with my 235/50 x 16 setup. IMHO, the extra sidewall height vice the
lower-profile options has protected my super-trick *forged* alloy wheels
from damage.

They're not so idiotic. You may be inhibiting the performance of your car by
putting a large diameter and width rim on it. If it's bigger, unless it's an
ultra-light alloy, it's gonna weigh more. More weight means it takes more hp to
turn the wheels and move your car down the highway. Hence, your car will become
slower. 20's look great but you need to think about wheel offset, impact on
drivability and performance. Wider wheels don't necessarily turn corners
better.

I read an interesting article in a recent issue of the German magazine Auto
Motor & Sport. They compared 16, 17 and 18 inch wheels for the Mercedes
E-class (all were Mercedes options, not after-market stuff). The comparisons
were braking dry/wet, slalom dry/wet, skid pad dry/wet and perhaps something
more (I don't have the magazine here). The result, perhaps surprisingly, was
that the 17" wheels won in almost every category. In one or two categories
the 18" wheels won by a very slim margin, inconsequential except on perhaps
a racing track. The ride was however much worse with the 18 inch wheels. So,
bigger does not always mean better.
Apart from the increased unsprung weight, the suspension geometry may get
screwed up.
The only rational reason that I can see to fit 20 inch wheels is to give
room for huge brakes.

Road and Track ran a similar test but with a 540. 17" was the winner there
too. Law of diminshing returns. 20" wheels may look awesome, but from the
test that I read, I'd have to consider them a "poser" option.

what not 22"?.. Are you serious?... why would you want 20" tires? so, you can
feel like you are riding on medal? It would be an awful ride.

dinan recommends 18" for the 540.
