Hello, we have just took delivery of an Audi A8L a week ago, everything
works great etc. but when we use the windshield washer system, the smell
of the windshield washer fluid (smells like ammonia) comes into the car
through the air vents. I'm wondering if there's any problem with the way
the car's venting system works? How can the smell of the windshield
washer fluid run into the interior of the car through the air vents?
This does not make sense to me. Also, one of the washer jet seems to
"shoot" all the way to the back of the car instead of shooting onto the
windshield, what seems to be the problem? Can it be aligned by the
dealer?

Any comment is appreciated!

Thanks

Try using it at speed.. you should find that it will hit dead centre..

The smell is supposed to happen. Vent takes air from outside the vehicle.
Press the "recirculate" button before washing and you will aavoid most of
the odor. Audi washer fluid has alot of alcohol to help remove bugs etc...

Thank you for your suggestion and comment. That's what we have been doing when we
do get the smell. It's interesting how the Audi washer fluid has so much alcohol
in it that makes the smell nauseous. The washer fluid of our Toyota or a Mercedes
doesn't seems to have such problem...

Thanks again!

then just buy a different washer fluid or dilute it a bit more...

AFAIK Audi does not require a specific washer fluid

This is because the Audi washer fluid has a large percentage of alcohol
and the air intake is right at the base of the windshield. On the new
A8"s the fresh air flap cycled to recirculated air when the windshield
washers are operated.

Eric,

It doesn't seem to be in recalculation since the smell actually gets worse
overtime unless I manually press the recalculation button on the center console...
if it does switch to recirculating air, how long will it keep itself in the
recalculation mode and would we know if it's switched to recalculation?

Thanks and any further input is always appreciated.

Sincerely,

Kelvin

Get some of that pink fluid. It smells like bubble gum.
