Hi, my 95 A4's immobiliser is sometimes kicking in when the ignition is on
when I try to start the car. You know how you stick the key in it checks for
a while and the little key icon flashing light on the dash will stop
flashing after 2 seconds and you can start the car. Otherwise it'll cut the
engine off after 2 seconds of starting (why let you start in the first
place?) and the key icon continues to flash. THis is what happens even when
I am using my original key that's always worked. I've tried with my spare
key and have had audi looked at it, all they suggested me do was to have a
complete system replaced and have a separate key for the ignition while
using my old key for the doors... (?!!!) so I thought that would be a bit
stupid. They said it was something to do with the reader coil or something,
and it's a known problem with old A4s, has anyone managed to fix this? Or
know any good 3rd party specialists who would do it for much cheaper than
Audi and I would be able to use the same key?

Thanks, Jules

Happened on my A3 last year, its the ignition key barrel that goes faulty.
Dont know if its a common fault, but it gives the problem you describe.
Turn the key, engine starts and immobliser light flashes and engine dies.

There is an easy way to get going again which is to *remove* the key,
reinsert and the car should start.

I got mine replaced by the dealer and they recoded the keys so I didnt have
to have different keys. Your dealer should be able to do the same.

Hope that helps.

about having all keys replaced, contact a good auto electrition, they will
do it for you, Audi wanted 140Ł for mine, but I still live with it, 40k
miles on, only happens rarely

Hi!
This happened also to my 1997 A4 at 100,000 and 200,000 km. In both cases I
just had to replace the coil in the key reader and the car worked again just
fine. Cost around CHF 200 ($150).
Hope this helps.

Wow where did you get yours done? If it's ok can I have their contact
name/number, so if my Audi men try to bluff me I could tell them your guys
(Audi too?) are more honest (or maybe more skilled?). Or would other
non-Audi alarm/immobiliser specialists do the job too?

Thanks, Jules
