I recently bought a 2nd hand 75 3.0 v6 qv that I am driving for fun, I drive
a 155 1.6ts for 'normal' day to day use. I love driving the 75 because of
its power and easy to control oversteer behavior. But I also found that the
155 makes me feel a lot more comfortable in high(er) speed, longer curves.
The 155 tells me exactly where the limits are (very far indeed... :):) ),
the 75 becomes unstable. It feels as if it rolls a little. (kind of a scary
sensation at those speeds) I have had 75s before, and as far as I can
remember they also had the same 'feeling'. (At that time I could not compare
it with other cars, and was happy with its handling) I also drove a 33 1.7qv
for many years, and this car feels very much like my current 155. (I
personally think that a 155 has better road handling when looking for the
limit)

As far as I can tell the shocks of the 75 are in good condition.

I want to improve my 75, even if it is going to cost me..... What would be
the most effective upgrade. The Alfa 75s were used for racing, so I bet more
people had to solve this problem. (Or is it just in my mind, and normal for
a rear wheel drive car)

Thanx in advance for any suggestions!

Never had the pleasure to drive a 75...
But drove a 33 for 2 years and a 155 one year now.
The 155 has far better roadhandling than the 33.
For example, we all have some favourite roads and curves in the
neighbourhood, so by now I know just exactly how to take some curves
and -just- not crash ;-)
With the 33 I could take the curve with say 60, with the 155 with say 80.
The 33 dwelled, the 155 stays firm on the road. But when the 155 goes... it
goes! Well 1200 in stead of 900 kilograms, sounds logical !
The 155 seems to 'stick' to the road, the 33 glided everywhere...
Although I must say that my 33 Imola 1.4 had no powersteering, the 155 does
have powered steeringwheel. Drives differently!
I love how the 155 roars and accellerates when getting into high revs (6000
and up).

I know what you mean, I drive a 75 Twin Spark and sometimes have
difficulties following dad's 146 Diesel !
First of all, the basic design of a 75 happened in the mid seventies, so is
about 30 years old, if Alfa hadn't advanced it's chassis on its new cars
since then, it wouldn't be here anymore. Secondly, the concepts are
different; af fwd will drag you through a corner, whereas a rwd has to be
'set up' for a corner. The result is that you have to put more effort in
driving a rwd, but it is more fun, satisfying, and if done right, quicker.
If you want to compare, take a BMW 5 series before they went multi-link (a
nice 1989 vintage will do) and drive it in anger. Now change your pants and
drive the 75.

There -apparantly, judging from numerous discussions and sites- are also
some other (rubber?) parts that wear through time and influence roadholding.
Also, lowering the car enhances stability-when done right; eibachs,
bilstein/koni's,.. A mate of mine had a 75 3.0V6 that was lowered about
10cms(!) and was rock solid.
The downpart is that rear end departures are harder to feel coming, and the
life expectancy of both exhaust and sump are about a week. Oh, and some
mighty strange tyre wear, as the front camber changes when lowering.

Apparently the SZ is based on a (shortened) 75 group A racing chassis. On
www.gtv6.org there is a description on how to convert a transaxle alfa
('fetta, 'letta, 90, 75, GTV,..) into a zagato. The SZ was measured by a
french car mag (sport auto) to pull 1,4g in the corners. By comparison; a
Ferrari 512 TR M pulls 0,98g, a Porsche 911 GT3 pulls 1,2. I also saw Tiff
Needell drive a SZ on a wet roundabout and got the impression it was not set
up for wet conditions, which might explain the 1,4g in the dry.

Novitec and Engstler offer biturbo conversions for the V6 ;-)

Enjoy,

Stiffen up the suspension with Koni Sports and use seriusly stiffer front
springs and anti roll bar to get it sorted out and LOWER it.
Also better brakes are needed...
Myself I´m building An Endurance racing Saloon car of a 75 3.0 America.
