Hi,

Recently bought a 1999 156 Selespeed, after 2 weeks i noticed when
starting in 1st gear (2nd once car is in motion)and moving in slow traffic
the car is very jerky, was told this was normal for this particular
model.

Just wondering if anyone has had a simliar problem and found a solution.

Thanks in advance.

As far as I know there is a software up-date that remedies this!
Check with your Alfa dealer.

I have a 2001 selespeed model and at 47,000km, am having the same
jerking motion in slow second gear speed.
I've already done the 4407 upgrade so it's not a software problem.
I more inclined to think the clutcth may be the culprit, either the
thrust bearing or the diagphram tension. No audible whine heard
though, whether in neutral or when in gear and stationary.
Anyone has any ideas?
Thanks a bunch.

I have experienced similar problems in both my TS and JTS 156 Selespeeds
when caught in traffic jams on the expressway.

It seemed to me (not being very technical minded) that when crawling along
at very slow speed with continual deceleration and slight acceleration that
the clutch keeps kicking in and out causing the the jerking motion.

I likend it, at the time, to driving a normal manual car in similar
conditions and not co-ordinating the clutch and accellerator action
properly. This can cause a similar exprencience.

In normal driving I have not had experienced any problems in this regard .eg
pulling off slowly from sets of traffic lights.

On reading the various posts regarding this matter I took the JTS around the
block and tried to induce the jerking motion ( I experienced on the
expressway) at extremly low speed to no avail. The car ran very smoothly, in
1st gear, with the clutch engaging and disengaging as I accelerated and
de-accelerated without any jerking motion. Could this have something to do
with the clutch plates heating up afer time causing them to grab a bit.
I don't know.

I guess the answer is to keep our Alfas on the open road where they are
meant to be.

May very well be the clutch. I have 166 2.5 of which the clutch has recently
been replaced. I have had the same problem ever since.
