Hi all,

Got a phonecall today from my dealership (Sam van Lingen, Houten,
Netherlands); They want to upgrade the selespeed software in my 156 (free of
charge). Apparently "FIAT Nederland" has ordered to do this.. anyone know
details? I've made an appointment for Wed Nov. 28 to have it done... just
hope they're not gonna "fix" what ain't broken :))

Would this be a recall by any chance.

I heard from my local dealer last week that there was one for the
Selespeed, but they did not have the details at the time.

I spoke to a local dealer today and was told that there is a Selespeed
"recall". It's to fix a problem that many Selespeeds apparently have
- they can stall at junctions. This happened to mine earlier this
year and my dealer replaced an actuator. However the problem
subsequently recurred. Hopefully this SW upgrade will solve the
problem once and for all!

Is this concere to 156 Selespeed only or to 147 SS also? I am from
Croatia and own a 147 SS. I heared that problems with 156 SS are
solved for 147. Is this correct?

Alen,

As far as I'm aware it's only for 156.

As far as I know the 147 already has the most recent software and the "2nd
generation" Selespeed (like the flippers behind the steering wheel); the "old"
problems are limited to the 156's only.

Hi Hans,

I had my Selespeed firmware upgraded 2 days ago as part of this recall
but haven't noticed any difference yet.

Same here, Norman. Been driving with upgraded Selespeed for nine days now,
haven't noticed any difference. Unfortunately downshifting to first gear
*still* happens too late! ;)

Did the Dealer give any indication as to what the upgrade cured?
I have heard about stalling at low speeds, athough never had this problem
myself.
I guess it don't cure an intermittant lack of 4th gear problem that I have!
I've had sooo many firmware reinstalls over the past couple of months to try
to resolve this!!
BTW the downshifting *problem* is a feature and not a fault!!! Pity it can't
operate like it does in city mode though.

Ivan.

156 Selespeed. (waiting 6 weeks for a new "control unit" and counting!!)

Nope, I was in a bit of a hurry when picking up the car and the guy at the
frontdesk was clueless. I've heard about the stalling thing too, and it has
actually happened to me once, last February. I was then provided with new
Selespeed software and it hasn't happened to me since. Knock on wood!

I will hope for you! :)

I know it's a feature, but it's a stinking feature.. hate it when I roll to
a red light, then when I'm almost standing still the light flips to green,
and I'm still in 2nd gear... :)

My 156 has the same fault especially when cold, the idle also 'bounces' up
and down (1500 to < 600) when moving slow, in gear or not !!

Hi Ivan,

No, the dealer didn't know what it was supposed to fix - I jus know
that it didn't do the changes that I hoped for!!!

Is it only me or does anyone else want the gear lever movement
reversed - back for up, forward for down like any normal sequential
box - and to get rid of the automatic downchange.

I get totally cheesed off when I go for a downchange just as the ECU
decides to do the same and I end up going down 2 gears. I'd much
rather do it all myself.

I've never driven other sequentials so I guess it's a matter of getting used
to it.. moving lever "up" to shift gears up seems logical to me :)

Same here. Accidentally shifting down two gears at a time happens too much
to me!!

How long you had the Selespeed?

I used to have problems with the downchange as well, but I have not had that
problem for a while! Maybe you just get used to "knowing" when it's going to
downchange!
The same could be said for the way round the stick is for going up and down
the box.
You are right it is the wrong way round, but you get used to it!

Anyway the control unit that has been on back order is now in, so hopefully
no more neutrals when I select 4th from next Tuesday :-))

Ivan.

156 Selespeed. (hopefully fixed next week!)

I agree that the gear change seems the wrong way around. I think its
because as you accelerate you are being pushed back, and it seems more
natural to pull the stick back, rather than forward against the acceleration
forces acting on you. The only similar system I know of is BMWs SMG fitted
on their M3. I am tempted to buy one of these, if this works opposite to my
wife's Alfa swapping between cars could be very difficult.

Hi Ivan,

I've had the Selespeed for 13 months or 38,000 miles if you prefer.

What I tend to do is to do a manual down-change well before the box
decides to do it's own. Then I generally know where I'm going to end
up.

I agree that you get used to it but it just seems wrong - I'm a fussy
so-and-so.

Hope your problems get fixed,

There is definitely a knack to changing gear. I have had my selespeed 5
months and at first had some difficulty witht the gearchange. Then I decided
the problem was that I had too many choices, so now:

1 I never use city mode
2 Always use the stick to change and try to avoid switching between stick
and buttons ( not easy)
3 Actively change down through the gears and never wait for the software
to make the decision for me.

I rarely have a problem with 3 to 2, though I still get caught out
occasionally when I want to go in to 1st

Hi David.

is there any FAQ, mailing list or any informations on the Selespeed?
I would love to read more about this issues.

The thing is that i am driving my 156 Selespeed for one year now and i
never had any bad experiences with it.

I always use the city mode in towns and rarely change the gears with the
stick since i find it more convenion and faster to button the gears. No
problems with changing gears in cold weather also!

Looks i got a good one (knock-knock).

My Selespeed has been problem free in so far as it performs to spec. I just
find it a lot easier to drive as a manual and pre-empt those annoying
software controlled gear changes

All the useful comments I have picked up on the Selespeed have been off this
site and I don't think you will find anywhere better. You could also have a
look at http://www.carsurvey.org/review_9701.html
