First let me say hello to Doc and Gary, (it's been a while).
The overall gearing in my 79 Scottsdale is very low (high
numerically) which makes for very poor mileage at highway
speeds because of high engine speeds at a given rpm.
Is it possible to change the gear ratio in the transfer case
with a lower numerically set that would decrease engine rpm
at a given speed .
I want taller gearing but i dont want to change the ring and
pinion in both axles, am i dreaming here or is it possible to
perform such a operation?
If so who would i contact to acquire this gearset for the NP203?
TIA, George
P.S. I'm back on the road again driving a 99 Kenworth T2000
pulling a 53' reefer around the 48 states plus Canada, what a sweet
ride the KW is, C12 Caterpillar w/a Super 10 tranny ridin & guidin...
Take care

Mad Dog,

Several places make UD NP203s but I've never heard of an OD unit. Maybe
someone else knows of one.

You can change the R&Ps, add a www.gearvendors.com gear splitter (UD/OD)
unit, or swap to larger tires. An OD AT is another option; the OD on a
4L80E is .75, just like swapping 4.10s for 3.08s!

no

the 203 is 1:1 in high, there is no room to put another gearset as you
desire

If it's an auto, how about using a 700-R4 for the benifit of having O.D. Or
wouldn't the cheapest way be to gear up the diffs.

Okay, the 4L80E and 700R4 are out of the question since i just
put this TH350 together for $600.
Gear Vendors makes the overdrive unit (thanx Dean) for $2600
that replaces the back cover of the transfer case (pretty slick unit).
I just installed a set of BF Goodrich 32x10.50-15 A/T's on the stock wheels
and that helped a little, i'm gonna see if i cant shorten the life
of the stock diffs. then i can justify swapping R&P's.
I purpose built the truck for off-road so i better learn to live
with it (i'm gonna reap what i sowed).
Thanx Dean,Gary and Luke for all your help
