Need torque specs for '03 Envoy transmission pan bolts using new gasket.
Did my annual "drain the pan & new filter" routine and discovered I
didn't have the correct specs to reinstall the pan. TIA
===============
===============
TorqueSpecs: good-n-tight
I personally use a 3/8 impact gun with a 4"
extension.....it's tight when the socket and
extension rattles.
WARNING........
my 3/8 impact is worn out......adjust yours
accordingly.
but seriously folks.......
you could do it this way too.....
use a ratchet with a 6 inch extension, tighten
the pan bolts up to "snug"......then using only
one hand on the ratchet, tighten the pan bolts
up tight. Then.....using the other hand hit each
bolt one more time with jest a little nudge.
actually works faster than it sounds.
Fact.....not Fiction
MarshMonster
~tightens 4 or 5 a day that way~

I always torque mine to 14 Ft/Lbs. That is about the correct amount
based on the bolt size and hardness. You could go a little more but
the important thing is that they are all the same torque and not to
squeeze out the gasket.

don't go more than 15ft/lbs at the most... it's not the bolt you need
to worry about.. it's the aluminum the housing is made from.

The plug is a 1/2-13 nut & bolt. While the pan was off I drilled a 1/2
in. hole & tack welded (I've got a small mig welder) a nut to the inside
of the pan. The nut has a couple hacksaw slots about 1/3rd of the way so
oil can drain from the bottom and not stop at a level the thickness of
the nut. The nut is tightened in place and tack welded on sides opposite
the saw slots. I use a hardware store copper washer as the actual seal.
I've done this on a couple vehicles. Just have to look at the bottom of
the trans. to make sure the location of the drain will not interfere
with anything. Most auto parts stores sell a drain kit that is tightened
in place and has a 1/8 in. pipe plug as the actual drain. While they are
ok some residual oil will remain in the pan.
===========
===========
Same ole question.......
How you gonna change the filter?
Yank it out through the drain hole?
Summit Racing, B&M, or any trans parts
house will sell you a drain plug kit for around
$8.00. Pop a hole in the pan and stick her
on in there.
No welding involved.
Though you may still have that residual left
in the pan.....you know.....bout a half a coffee
cup full. But not to worry......you can just
wipe that out with a rag.......
WHEN YOU TAKE THE PAN OFF TO CHANGE THE FILTER.
after all......that's why you do a service any ways .....ain't
it??????????????
hmmmmmm......maybe i've been wasting
my money all these years....changing the
oil filter when i done all them oil changes.
nah....

Nope. But I don't trust transmission flushes. AFTER I change the filter, I
like to drain the pan a couple of times over a period of a few weeks to get
more of the old fluid replaced. That's much more easily done with a plug
installed. Makes filter changes much less messy, too for those of us that
don't have a lift to put the vehicle on.

Hairy fellow,
If you read my post, you'll notice that i may
have made a slight mention about an easier
way to put in a drain plug, and possibly, if i
remember correctly, i may have made a minor
reference to changing the filter after you pulled
the plug.
With that said......
Yer a smart feller for not trusting tranny flushes.
I don't advocate them at all. Totally against the
process, for my own reasons.
any whooo......
bout draining that fluid a couple times......
why over several weeks?
why a couple times?

this?

could you please define "flush" for me,

> why over several weeks?
> why a couple times?
Because you can't completely drain the torque converter just by draining
the pan. A lot of fluid remains in the converter. So if you drain it
several times, each time you drain it you dilute the "old" fluid by half.
You have to drive it a bit to mix the old fluid with the new before you
drain it again. A few weeks isn't necessary, 10 miles or so should do.
Say 25% of the fluid remains in the transmission after draining. If you
fill it up with fresh fluid, you have 75% fresh fluid, and 25% old. Drive
it a bit, drain and refill. Now you have 12.5% old fluid, 87.5% new. Do
that again, 6.25% old fluid, 95.75% new, and that's good enough for me.
> how often do you torment yerself by doing
> this?
Me, every 5 years or so, but I only put about 3 or 4 thousand miles a year
on my truck. My other two cars are manuals, and get the gear oil changed
every 2 years.
> and ......
> could you please define "flush" for me,
Take it to a transmission shop. They disconnect the lines that lead to
the tranmsission cooler and hook them up to a flushing pump. It forces
new fluid in, and most all the old fluid out. Eliminates the drain and
refill 3x method. Most of the chain shops do NOT include changing the
filter in this service.
BTW, could you please use normal quoting characters, a ">" before each
line of quited text, rather than this:

It makes it really tough to figure out who said what.

We've tried to get the Marsh man to cut and paste
and quote normally, but so far it hasn't worked. I
will say that it's much better then it used to be when
he first appeared. Once you figure out his way of
putting together a post, you can sorta make heads or
tails of what he's saying. I don't think I smoke what
he's smoking, so that could be part of the problem.

however.......
what's the chances that yer wrong???

oh yeah.....
i'm gonna check up on that tranny flush deal.
jest in case i might be the one that's mislead'n

if i was wrong bout you....i promise to make

i'm gonna work on this quoting thing too.
but fer now.....

that help yuh any??
how bout that background color??
is it okay???
some folks don't like it.
but then.....
some folks don't tint there eyeballs with the
same chemicals i do.....so go figure.
by the way ......
i didn't ask for a definition of a tranny flush.
i asked for HIS definition of "Flush".
you might want to look it up yerself.
now......
would you mind answering a question for me?
during this little proceedure......
are you changing the filter EVERY time?
the understanding here is that yer doing this
at least 3 times ....and you personally advocate
that 10 miles between the draining is enough...
correct??
3 filters
18 qts tranny fluid
that's what.....bout $55.00 ????????????
of course.....we kinda need to figure in all
that aggrevation involved in actually doing
it ON THE GROUND....too don't we.
you know....
that scalding hot arse fluid run'n down yer
arm pits.....lmao.
hehehehehehee
yer silly
and you reeeeellly think.....
that doing it 3 times is doing it good???
bout that process you explained to me.....
let me see if I can figure yer logic here.
A 4L60E holds 12 qts of fluid.
now on the first service you cut that down
by 1/2
so you pour in 6 qts....now you got.....
how many quarts dirty fluid is still in the
tranny???? jest 6????
ROTFLMFAO.....
yer not only silly.....
yer hilarious.
