FYI, I disabled the DRLs on my 99 Tahoe by unplugging fuse #15. It seems to
have disabled only DRL and nothing else. The lights work as normal when
switched on. The green light is still on the dash, but I can live with
that.

i have a 99 Silverado, 4X4 and i like the DRLs,,,,,,,,why would you want
THEM disabled - just curious. to me they help with inclimate weather
letting other drivers know you are behind them, beside them or coming AT
them :-)

what i didn't like was the Sentinel Headlights - now THAT bothered me. i
disabled them thanks......... to Neil

i don't have a green light on my dash - or is that an "indicator" when the
bulbs burn?

thanks

I disabled the DRLS on my truck as well. When passing a guard shack you are
supposed to have the lights off so they can see the occupants. Also, when
coming home late at night I turn off my lights so as to not wake my daughter
whose room would be lit up like a xmas tree if they were on as I came up the
dirveway.

I agree on the safety factor. As a result, from before DRLs existed, I
always drive with my lights on. Both head and marker, which provides more
visibility than DRLs.

They are safer. I do believe that people can see you more easily. However,
I can't stand not being able to turn them off. My DRL were not very much,
if any, dimmer than my headlights. I felt guilty when stopped behind a
small car with my lights blasting them. At RR tracks at night, it is
courteous to turn your lights off. Previously mentioned guard gates,
evening scenery/wildlife drives, etc. I want to be able to turn them off
when I need to. I can turn them on at dawn/dusk for added safety.

I have a green headlight icon on the dash that is on whenever the headlight
switch is off. It is supposed to indicate DRL on, but with it on all the
time I have learned to ignore it. I would prefer real DRL, which would be
ONLY the running lights, not dimmed headlights or glaring white lights.

Gregory,
I have a '99 GMC Sierra. Like you I think the DRL's are a great safety idea
(now that they are no longer the headlights). What I can not stand are the
automatic headlights. If this is what you are calling Sentinel headlights
please post or EM me how you disabled them

Thanks in Advance
Take Care

You can diasable them by pressing the parking brake just enough so the light
comes on. this kills the lights. Or, jump the parking brake light switch.

I am not sure if I am following this either. There may be confusion on
disabling DRL versus sentinel headlights.

The slightly depressed parking break trick should be for the DRLs. When the
parking break is engaged, the DRLs are supposed to go out.

There is confusion because GMC used the Sierra for both the old and new
generation of trucks. This thread was on how to disable the DRLs on the
old generaton '99 trucks (tahoe, yukon, suburban,C,K etc) these trucks
have their headlights on at all times - the tail and dash lights as well
as high beams are activated using a dash switch. The manual says you can
disable them by depressing the parking brake one click - this does not
engage the brakes - they say. Some have also found that the DRLs are on
a fuse along with fog lights. If you don't have fog lights, then you
can pull the fuse and disable the DRLs.

New generation GM trucks - the new Silverado, and new Sierra have a
different system. Their DRLs are not the same as the headlights-they are
down next to the turn signals and the light system has a sensor that
controls the head/tail/dash lights. It turns them on in the dark and off
in the light. There is also a dash switch to override the system for
turning the lights on - but not off. For these systems you need to
trick the system into thinking it is always daytime. The best way I have
seen is to replace the photodetector with a battery. That way the lights
are controlled only from the switch. I am not sure what that does to
the DRLs.

I have heard that the DRL can be reprogrammed by the dealer, just like
the door locks etc.

hey guys,
the DRLs are different from the Sentinal headlights. i disabled my 99
Silverado by following the direction in the following web site
http://206.139.32.21/ls1forum/Forum27/HTML/000201.html however, i went with
option #1. i was not into removing the dash. go to the site and you'll
understand.

it wasn't THAT hard, but not for folks with really big hands. it worked
great. the headlights come on when I want them on. all you are doing is
replacing the sensor on the dash with a 49 cent resistor from Radio Shack.
this fools the sys into thinking it's always day time

i personally have no intrest in disabling the DRLs - but i've read on here
that it's fuse #15. i don't think that pushing lightly on the E-Brake is a
good idea. my E-brake grabs real early and i would think ANY pressure on
that pedal would effect the system and put some drag on the rear disk pads.
but that's just MY thot on that.

later - good luck

I have a question about this. I posted the original msg on this thread
about how to shut-off the DRL (always-on) headlights on a 99 Tahoe. I
assume it works for all the old-model trucks. I am looking at the new-model
Tahoe and have heard that they will have the new sentinel headlights, which
turn on automatically. Is there no way to disable them on the new-model
trucks? If it is dim out then your lights are on - period (except for some
kind of homemade workaround)?? That seems a bit odd to me, to not have that
control. I'm all for safety, but control is safety also. I mean, you can
shut off your engine while in motion if you want, but not your headlights??
I also heard that the 2000 SIlverado has a feature to disable the DRL by
pressing the dome override switch several times. Is that true?

The dealer should be able to re-program the computer that controls this
function. It won't get rid of the DRLs, but it will disable the sentinel
headlights.

You can shut off both the DRL and the twilight sentinal on the

Read the owners manual!
That's how I learned how to turn them off. You can even disable the sensor
lights.

I found nothing in the manual to indicate how to disable the DRL on a 99.
Pushing the parking brake one click is the only way I found without pulling
the fuse.

The manual on my 2000 says the driving lights are off whenever the parking
brake is on. I'm planning to add a switch to do the same thing the parking
brake switch does so I can have them on or off as I want.
