Hi folks,

I plan to swap the 5.7 L engine in my 1981 Chevy G 30 25" Motorhome for a
6.2 L diesel or the newer 6.5 L turbo diesel.
Has anyone of you done this? Are there many parts to swap too or is it an
easy job?
What mileage makes a diesel engine copared to the gas engine in such small
size of motorhome?
Something special to know or an adress of a company that sells adapter-kits
or even a swap manual?

I'm thankful for every hint. Thanks.

Mark

Markus,

Don't do it! GM diesels are garbage. If you want performance and don't
want to spend a fortune, a 454 bolts right in. If you want mileage and
want to spend a fortune, there are places that swap Cummins into almost
anything. Try an RV place for leads. The 454 and the Cummins are as
reliable as an anvil.

Don't use the 6.2 as its very underpowered. I know a 350 is a bolt in swap
(or vice-versa) for a 6.2 though because I have done it myself.

I've owned a 6.2 Suburban for years and it is one of the finest engines I've
ever owned. It is a true
Detroit Diesel not like the 5.7 that GM made.

Now you will have to make sure that your transmission will bolt up

Make sure that the motor mounts line up

You will need to get fuel filters for the diesel

You will need to install another battery and hook them up positive to positive
and hook the grounds to the frame. The batteries need to be at least 900 amp or
you will burn up your starter more than you like.

My Suburban got 25 miles to the gallon on the freeway and about 19 in town not
bad for a 387 cubic inch
engine.
Check with your local GM dealer for a crate engine and then check your local
diesel shops.

Just a question? Why are you doing this?
Unless you drive your motor home allot I doubt you will recover the expense
to do the swap.
If you need more power for pulling, well maybe. If you like the smell of a
diesel, sure, go ahead.
A big block Chevy would be a easier, cheaper install, granted mileage would
suck, but again how much do you drive it? Most people do not put enough
miles on a motor home to justify the expense. Maybe you do, and have figured
it out, just askin'!
Just my 2 cents.
I once had a Ford pickup that got terrible mileage, on top of that the tank
was only 17 gallons. Cure? Bigger fuel tank!! Did not drive enough to mater
about the poor mileage, just wanted to get to the next gas station!

Bellhousing is the same - the motor mounts(engine stands?) that bolt to the
frame are the same - you need a flywheel or flexplate from the diesel - you
need a diesel rad. the exhaust bolts right up - we put a carbed 350 into an
85 chev with a 6.2 diesel. Easy swap.

One more thing. We had to use the power steering pump and bracketry from the
diesel on the gas engine because the diesel gets it engine vacuum from the
PS pump so if you are going from a gas to a diesel this may be a concern.

Well Greg, we have very different gas prices here in Europe.
A gallon regular is about US$ 3.60 and a gallon diesel costs US$ 2.85.
I don't know your actual prices but as I remember my last USA vacation in
1997 they were much less.
If you see the difference between both prices and the less fuel consumption
I would save US$ 800,- every year ( 6000 miles).
And a very important point too: If I will trade in or sell my gas motorhome
I loss much money, I will have to give it away nearby for free, a diesel is
much more asked here in Europe. My savings are US$ 4000,- in 5 years und it
will trade in much better (maybe US$ 2000,- to 4000,-) and is in a shorter
time to sell.
You see it will recover the expense.

Remember that diesel parts cost way way more than parts for a gas engine.
For example the diesel inj. pump is $1200 vs about $400 for an in tank pump
for the gas engine. A starter, alternator, or rad will cost you twice as
much. If you needed any of these parts your $800 savings will be gone in a
hurry.

I have been thinking some more on this swap. I think what we did putting a
gas motor into the diesel was far easier than putting a diesel into where a
gas motor was before. You will need a lot of diesel specific components to
go with your diesel engine. The only way to do this is to buy a wrecked
truck or the parts from a wrecker. If you are paying a mech. shop rate of
$65 hr. then the labor will add up quick, not to mention the cost of the
parts required. In my part of the world, a good running low mileage 6.5
turbo diesel engine goes for $4500 - $5500 at the wreckers. That is engine
only and will not include nearly what you need to complete the swap. Not
trying to discourage you, diesel torque and mileage is great, but I'm not
sure the swap is worth it unless you can find a worthy donor truck with a
diesel engine.
