I tried that once. Flamed out...first, I couldn't figure out how tell
if a shop was good or not; second, the few guys I talked to didn't
seem like the kind of people I'd voluntarily associate with.

Every car I've ever driven need a trans sometime before 100k, so this
is an ongoing problem for me too.

Right now, I think the next one will be either a factory rebuild with
a warranty that my (trusted)local mechanic will vouch for or a brand
new one.

For the installer/source, I'm thinking maybe a performance-oriented
shop that routinely installs beefed-up units in performance cars or
the trusted local mechanic if they do that kind of work.

Comments?

Thanks for the input Gary, but I need a warranty that will travel
with me. When my family and I are on the road. Here in Eureka CA
there are not many places to choose from, and none seem to specialize
on trucks specifically.

Hi Pete,

Aamco says that their transmission is better than the factory one, and
would have a shift kit, better cooling, and heavier duty parts. The
dealer on the other hand would put in the exact same thing that it
has in it. Both have 3 year 50k warrantees, though the dealer is a
bit more expensive. I just want it to last.

I would love to hear from anyone who has tried either option...

find a shop that is a member of ATRA, they have a nation-wide inter-shop
warranty arrangement

goto trucktrend.com and look at there advertisements. Cannot think of
there name but supposed to do a better job at rebuilding the 4L80e for
better torque. Am looking at them for my 1 ton when it goes.
Good luck.

I'll check it out. None listed in the yellow pages mention ATRA.
Eureka is pretty much out in the sticks.

Aamco would be the LAST place I would ever take a transmission. Stay away from
that place.

Get a factory rebuilt one and have your mechanic install it.

Maybe I'm a cynic, but I'd expect a corporation's marketing department
to say anything they think enough people would believe to make it
profitable.

I dealt with an Aamco shop in Philly quite a few years ago. My take
was that it's some sort of franchise that anybody can buy into and
which has very little parent company supervision. Basically, no
diferent from any other independent shop except the owner has bought
into some name recognition and advertising. But, like I said, that
was some years ago - maybe they're different now.

I once called my local Aamco shop and asked for a budgetary price range
for a complete trans rebuild. I was told that:
- Aamco was the most experienced trans shop in the country
- they could not even guess at what a -budgetary- price -range- would be.

I went to a local shop. Got a national warranty.
Aamco preys on consumers's fear and lack of knowledge.

Go elsewhere ...

My regular Mechanic is at the Chevy dealer, or me and I am pretty sure
that they would only warranty their own part. I was recommended Aamco
by another mechanic, but since I have only lived in the area a year I
don't know many people. I am going to call around some more to other
mechanics to see what the concensus is.

Why is Aamco the LAST place you would go?

By factory rebuild do you mean from the dealer?

Thanks for your response.

I made the mistake of taking a transmission to Aamco 3 years ago and I will
never go back.

The tranny lost 1st gear and I told them that I wanted a complete rebuild.
They "said" they rebuilt it, and 3 days later the pump blew out. They wanted
to charge me to put in a new pump! After fighting with the owner for about 10
minutes, they finally agreed to put in a new pump at no cost. I get it back
and not 2 miles down the road from the shop, the sprag breaks. Turns out that
they replaced it with a faulty part. And they wanted to charge me to put in a
new one, knowing full well that it was their fault it broke!!

I finally threatened to call the BBB and got all my money back form them and
took it elswhere. I have had no problems with it since.

Goodbye Aamco.

I guess I am going to go for the Dealer. They have done some work for
me in the past that I have been happy with. I wouldn't feel confident
enough to go to any other shop in town. I doubt I would have any
problem with warranty work needed from them.

Thank you very much for you input.

Check out http://www.transonline.com. Print out the section on "rebuild
minimums, do or die". Learn all of the update mods for a professional
rebuild for the 4L80E. When you interview a shop for the work, you have the
specific internal changes from stock which will make your trans better than
stock. You will also let the shop know that you aren't going to be fucked
with.

Thanks Niko,

I guess I am going for a factory rebuild. The original got 145k. I
had a BFGoodwrench rebuilt engine in my last Suburban, and it was a
solid performer. This is the first Chevy I have ever had crap out on
me. I think the the previous owner must have towed in overdrive or
some similar abuse. I will continue to search the site for the
"rebuild minimums , do or die" cool site. Tomorrow I get a second
mechanics opinion.

Thanks again,

Steve

Aamco does seem to have a bad rep in places. Check several dealers (as in talk
in person with the parts man). Prices can vary. That's what I'd do unless I
had a local that I knew. But if you are gonna be draggin' trailers all over
the US of A, definitely get one from GM

Yeah I have pretty much settled on having the dealer do it.

Thanks for your response. I cancelled Aamco today. Tomorrow it get
checked out by the dealer.
