Hi all,

The "Service Engine Soon" light came on yesterday afternoon and has remained
on steady. The manual claims that this might be some sort of emissions
problem and to have it checked out.

I was wondering what I could/should check before taking it in for service.
I've never had this problem in any vehicle before so I'm a bit of a novice.

Thanks,

-CTM

Todd,

Disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes. If the light
comes on again, it's likely to be a real problem and someone with an
OBDII scan tool needs to pull the code.

Of course, disconnecting the battery will clear any history of the codes
it's caught. On OBDII vehicles the first thing to check is the gas cap,
people often won't tighten them enough...

Is your gas cap tight?

Any good auto shop can plug in your computer and read the codes stored and
advise you. Or you can buy a manual ans short the computer leads together
with a paper clip and read them yourself.

Can't do this on OBDII!!!!!! The computer is A LOT more complex than
the old ones where you could get a flash-code for SES codes...

Thanks for all of your help, everyone. The light has stayed on and I'm
taking it in to check the OBDII codes this afternoon. I did check the gas
cap and made sure it was as tight as possible.

Probably the EGR valve, seen many fail on these vehicles.
