Hi, I just bought a '88 Chevy K1500 silverado 4x4, 350 automatic..
everything works except for some minor interior light problems.. but anyway,
the only thing that really bugs me is that the 4x4 light on the floor
doesn't work.. any ideas? I know it isn't a big deal, but I would just like
it to work.

do you mean the bulb is burned out, or there is no power coming to it
when in 4x4....and are you sure that the 4x4 is really working???

I don't want make your question sound stupid, but there are lots of
problems with the electric tran. case....I hope you have changed the
bulb!!

Its one of 2 things, I think. The switch on the transfer case (electrical
connector loose, etc) or the bulb is burned out.

What is with it 88 Chevy Silverado 4x4? I just bought one
with a few minor problems, too? One of them is that the 4x4
indicator light does work. I don't know anything about
4x4's period. But what I have learned in the short time
I'had this vehicle is that if the indicator light doesn't
work the 4 wheel drive doesn't either for whatever reason.
If you come with a fix, pass it on there's coupel of us in
this boat.

Thanks, Rick, for taking the time to explain how this
acutator thing works. I'll let you know how this turns
out.

My '93 z71 pu had the same problem... traced it to be an inoperative
"timer/actuator switch" that screws right into the front diff... see, when you
flip the lever or switch to go into 4WD juice goes either to a relay on the
firewall or directly to the timer/actuator switch on the front diff. The
thermal timer within the timer/actuator switch then turns on, extending a shaft
into the diff. engaging the front axle while at the same time turning on the
switch that juices up your indicator light.

That electrical switch is a very common problem... so common in fact that GM
now has an improved??? version which requires a modification to the wiring
harness to install... I ordered the old one (steel) instead, new and improved
is plastic and located just where a rock can (and will) hit it ruining your
day.

There are many many 4x4 Chevy's out there using imaginary 4WD thinking they
have a burned out bulb when in fact all they have is 2WD if the have the
locking rear.

Hello,
I'm still in the research of this very problem. 91 S-10 4x4. I have the
older vacuum actuator, with the cable and switch that you mention.>
My problem is I get the front axle indicator light on, but not the 4 hi, N,
or 4 lo lights to come on. However, I do get front axle pull.> This is only
cosmetic, but I would like it the way it was designed to be.

Thanks,
Fisherman

sounds like the 91 is the same as my 88. These lights are controlled by a
switch right on the lever. check there, make sure the switch slides with
the lever and make sure the bulbs are not burned out.

First of all thanks, again. I removed the actuator from the
front diff and hooked directly to the battery to test -
worked fine. I measured the amount of voltage going into
the acuator from its plug - I got a flucuating 8 volts. I
traced the wires from the front diff back to the transfer
case and discovered not one but two switches - one switch
on the left side of the transfer case as you look toward
the front of the vehicle and one almost directly over it on
top of the TC. It is this switch that provides the juice to
the acuator once the 4wd lever is pulled. If the connection
is corroded (as in my case) or other wise contaminated the
not only will the light not light but the actuator will not
get enough juice to function. Since I checked everything
out and in particular cleaned this plug, my 4WD has been
working fine. I hope this info is useful to some one else.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to give it a try. I had just taken my truck to the garage to replace the "new" style actuator. But when the garage took the
part back to the dealership for replacement, they said that they have not had a new style actuator got bad yet. So I will test all of the wiring. Thanks
