With a modern fuel injected engine, if everything is in proper working
order (radiator not old and clogged, heater core flowing ok), then get
the factory spec thermometer as that is the temperature the engine is
designed to operate best at.
But if old clogged radiator, a lower temperature thermostat or no
thermostat might be a "redneck fix" to keep it from overheating.
(Instead of doing it right and replacing the radiator.)
Or if heating is not working good due to clogged heater core, then a
higher temperature thermostat might give you more heat. (Instead of
doing it right and replacing the heater core.)
