I have an 89 S-10 Blazer with 173,000 miles on it. It's been maintained very
well. However when I got stuck in some mud recently I noticed the 4WD was not
working. The front wheels don't engage.
After getting back on the road I tried even 4LO, and while the truck engages in
the lower gears, the front wheels still will not engage. No indicator light
lights up on the 4WD shifter. I have no idea where to start looking.
Does anyone know what the problem might be? Is there something I can test, a
fuse? A vacuum line? Thanks in advance.

For what it's worth i had a similar situation when we had a 89 Blazer. Turned out
to be a defective electrical module on the transfer case that engages the front
differential.

My '91 had a similar problem once. It was a defective vacuum switch
located on the transfer case. I had to make a field repair and used
some WD40 to clean out the switch. Worked fine for a couple of days
until I replaced it when I got home.

Before I determined it to be the switch, I checked the vacuum diaphram
that engages the front axle and the hoses connecting everything.

Same problem on my 87 except I was stuck in snow!! Check the vacuum switch
on the transfercase, and most likely replace it, its cheap and easy to do.
That switches the vacuum lines to the bladder up front in the engine
compartment. Then check the bladder (mine was on the passenger side), it
should suck in when you put it in 4 wheel, this engages the front
differential. The bladder sucks in and pulls a wire which engages the front
differential. This wire could be broken, mine was proken off in the pumpkin
and I had to take apart the front front pumpking to fix it. Not that bad of
a job. That is as far as I've had it apart, but I'll try to help otherwise
if I can.

If anyone needs a new vacuum switch for the front axle, I've got a
bunch I'll sell at $12 each, including postage. These are brand new
switchs that have never been on a vehicle.

No, I don't have the part # but I do have about 15 of the vacuum
switchs(brand new, never used) floating around my shop. Send me
$12.00, I'll send you one.
