I have a 91 S10 Blazer 4x4 (4.3) 116k that runs great and want to know how
hard or how long it takes to replace the oil pump. The oil pressure has
taken a small plunge recently (even with 50 weight oil it never gets past 40
unless floored then maybe 45 then if you keep it floored for about 10
seconds down to 30-35) and I think the pump may be weak. If there is an
easier way to fix this problem any help is appreciated. Oh I also had the
oil pressure guage sending unit replaced last year.
thanks
jason

Only way to do this is to remove the oil pan, which means lifting the engine
slightly...

'91 S Blazer 4x4? Yeah, slightly, like about 2 feet. At the dealer,
we drop the front axle out of it...it's easier than removing the
engine...but only just barely, and then only if you have a rack.

What is the correct idle speed and cruising speed (200rpm) oil pressure for a 4.3L engine, from the shop manual? Has it been the same since introduction.

I'm not Big Daddy, but I happen to have my Haynes manual in front of me. For the 4.3L V-6 engine it says 10 PSI is sufficient at idle (500 RPM), at 2000 it
should be 30-55 PSI. It only lists one 4.3L so I'd guess it was the same from 88 to present...

Well, I *am* Big Daddy<g> and for once the Haynes manual agrees with
the factory manual. 10 to 55 lbs, and they're all the same. I think
the blocks are all pretty much the same and most of the differences in
the engines through the years have been in the induction systems.

Get a Haynes at a auto parts store that competes with the one you got the Chilton's at. I think Autozone and Parts America carry Haynes. You could try Amazon.com or bn.com (Barnes and Noble) as well...

On page 3-24 in the Engine and Engine overhaul section there is a table that lists things like horsepower, torque, bore&stroke, Compression ratio and oil pressure for all the engines. It states 18lbs at 2000 rpm for the 4.3L. It give the ratings for all engines at 2000 rpm.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I will wait on the pump replacement
unless it REALLY needs it. Even though 30-35 is fine at 2000 it used to be
a little higher not too long ago and that was when I was using 10w30 (yes a
regular oil) earlier in the summer. I now use 5w50 Castrol Syntec, which I
started using after the pressure drop, (yes it can be used in older cars)
and the pressure did go up at first but only 2000 miles after the oil change
it is now back to where it was. I'm taking the truck to a mechanic to have
some other work done but I will have the mechanic test the pressure with a
mechanical guage. I don't know maybe I'm being a little too concerned but
then again it would suck if the oil pump happened to quit when I'm
driving...

10 pounds/1000 rpm is sufficient for all small block Chevrolets and their
derivatives which includes the 4.3L.

I installed a mechanical oil gauge. Cold at idle I have 50lbs.
Warmed up at idle is 25-35lbs.
