'89 K5 Blazer problem

a little background:
New 350 two days old. Used most of the old sensors, distributor,
throttle body etc.
The problem:
Engine runs fine at idle and when you rev the motor. However, when you
give it just enough throttle to back out of the driveway(for example),
it starts to cut out and almost dies, but it does eventually correct
itself and runs smoothly. After replacing the throttle position sensor
and the HEI unit in the distributor, still the same thing. I then took
it to the dealer to have them run a daignostic. All they came up with
is a bad EGR. I really don't think that could be the problem.

Any help is definitely appreciated!

Try seeing how fast the egr opens. If it takes less than 3 to 4 seconds
(what i'm saying is there should be a 3 to 4 sec. delay) then it's
probably bad. Another check is the number of miles on the egr: they're
only good for about 70k. Your problem sounds like an egr that is
opening too fast, or an exhaust system with too much backpressure =
melted CAT.

I'm not sure what the dealer's asking for an egr ($), but the auto
parts store ones are about $75.

The EGR is likely to cause the problem your experiencing. Theres no magic to
find out, just unplug the vacuum line and try backing out of the driveway.
If the prob goes away - you just diagnosed it yourself. If it is the EGR I
would only put a GM EGR in it. One other thing to note - if you have a
non-stock exhaust system now (no converter or different muffler) this could
cause your EGR to open a little too much too soon and cause a stumble. You
could run around with your EGR unplugged but you will end up setting a code
and turning on your service engine soon light.

will that affect a 4 banger in the same way too. My S-10 never had a cat,
the previous owner took it off before I bought the truck. It never has
ideled real smooth. Not like a miss, but a slow waveing up and down of the
speed.

they were probably correct on diagnosis of the EGR valve or the EGR
solenoid is faulty . this is more likely the problem. while it is
running pull the vacuum line off at the EGR valve,if it has vacuum the

I have an 86 with a bad EGR valve. If I hook it up to the vacum
source the same thing happens. If I remove the vacum line and plug
it, it runs fine.
