What is, or how can you determine the largest tire size that will fit a
stock
'96 4x4 Suburban with out the rubbing problems.

it depends on what wheel size you are looking for. you can run 14.5" in the
rear no problem, and about 11.5" in front no problem. 33" is max height for
those.

The June issue of Four Wheeler magazine has a tire size guide
that says we can go up to a 31x10.5 tire stock for 92 and later
Suburbans.

I has 225/75-16 street tires on my 92 for the first couple of months
I've owned it. I just switched to 245/75-16 BFG AT's and noticed
it doesn't climb mountains like it used to.

I didn't think that going from the 225/75's to the 245/75's would
have been such a big deal, but I'm actually noticing a difference.
I'm also thinking a tired engine (just rolled over 100k) may be
coming into play on this too though.

So, they say up to a 31x10.5 tire will fit, or according to my
calculations that's a 265/75-16 too.

I 'm run 285/75-16 on my 93 1 ton Suburban. It's 4 wheel drive so I've got a
little lift but its still stock. I've had no problems.

Thanks for your input, I am about to hit 80K pretty soon so the power issue
could be a problem down the road. (I tow a travel trailer) Maybe the newer
vortex engine that came out in '96 will handle a larger tire size better? I
guess I'll just have to try it and fine out. I don't really want to get into
changing gears and stuff. May I ask what engine you have in yours? Did you
notice a change in mileage?

I really haven't looked for a change in mileage.

I have a 4wd 1500 with the 350 in it. It has the TBI.

I think what I'm seeing in the mountains is an engine that needs
a little work. The larger tires just made the problem more
noticable.

In fact, it really wasn't so much a problem with no power as it
was with the tranny downshifting while there was still space
between the pedal an the floor. I sure wish I could put a switch
on the dash to disable the transmission kick-down.

That vortec should handle it better than mine. From what I've
heard, they really made a huge improvement with the Vortec over my
TBI350.

Tell ya what. 265/75's will fit. You're taking a chance with
anything bigger. If they rub do you think the tire shop will
let you return your $700+ set of tires?

If you're not going to do much off-roading, then maybe you could
go larger and not worry about rubbing because you're not stuffing
your tires into your wheel wells.

Thanks again for the help, I'm not going to do any heavy duty off roading,
just looking for more clearance on the two-track and fire roads. Sounds
like I should stay safe an try the 265/75 so as to avoid any towing
problems. Larger than that would be pushing my luck.
