I have a 1983 240D with a broken front sway bar.It
broke right at the drivers side wheel. It appears
to run up on the firewall to the other wheel...Has
anyone ever had to replace this??

I just bought an 83 240D but I havent looked at the front end yet. I don't
think its that different from an 83 Standard Import Rear wheel drive design
and a weekend mechanic should be able to do it.
Lossen the fron tire lugnuts.Jack the Car up and put it on jackstands.
Safety is important. Remove tires. Working underneath car (Placing extra
jackstands or cinder blocks under car is important), undo the two brackets
that secure the sway bar to the front end. The Sway bar should have enough
freedom now to be easily removed from the Front Control arms.

The broken sway is fairly common problem on the W123's, and it's no fun to
change them, you have to remove the battery and it's tray, the brake booster
and master cylinder, and everything else in it's path, feel free to e-mail me
directly if you have any questions while working on it, the entire job takes me
about 3 hours, and also I do have a rust free used sway bar, $75.00 plus
shipping and it's yours.
