I hate Brake Dust. I was wondering what do you guys do, to reduce the
amount of brake dust on the front wheels?

Try the wheel cleaner - Simple Green - supposedly environmentally friendly,
but sure gets the brake dust off with a minimum of scrubbing - best stuff I
have ever tried, and so far the rims seem to take it OK.

It will also strip off any wax or other protection on the wheel.
Better to use a good wheel cleaner and wax the wheels .

I don't know how to reduce the amount of brake dust on the front wheels, but
P21s works very well at getting it off, if you get at it soon.

There is virtually nothing that can be done to reduce the amount of brake
dust collected by the front wheels. Brake shields have been found to be
ineffective and brakes tend to overheat by the lack of proper air
circulation.

The best way I've found to clean the wheels is dishwashing liquid with
degreaser additives. What is critical in cleaning the wheels is that the are
at room temperature. Clean the wheels with detergent & sponge, rinse, then
with the wheels wet rub undiluted detergent on the wheels, let it sit for a
minute & then rinse with a water jet. This will remove most of the brake
dust that might remain embedded on the metal. After drying the wheels I
usually spray Armour All on the wheels and the wipe off the excess: I've
found that the brake dust is easier to remove on subsequent cleaning.

Cleaning the wheels when they are hot with any agents will impregnate brake
dust in the microscopic indentation of the metal: The heat acts as a
catalyst between the brake dust & cleaning agent.

Hey, what a novel concept! Using wheel cleaner to clean wheels. Very
refreshing after the suggestions of using dishwashing detergent or
Simple Green. Cleaners made for a purpose will usually do the job
better than whatever's in the cupboard. I don't shampoo with Top Job
or brush my teeth with Ajax, and I'm not using Simple Green on my
wheels. It removes the wax that allows the brake dust to come off with
P21s or even ordinary car wash.

There was a thread about semi-metallic pads a few weeks ago. Someone was
going to try them, but I haven't heard more. Apparently they produce a sand
coloured dust and a lot less of it.

Have anyone tried dust covers for their brakes.. a plastic cover goes
between the rim and brakes (mount before the rim is mounted). I purchased
a pair (from PEP BOYS) but have not installed them yet... was concern about
a possible heating problem..

Why is it that no one can read deja.com? I mean it was discussed it this
thread! If you can't take the trouble to look, I won't take the trouble to
answer.

I love dust covers for brakes it makes me a lot of money. These covers
hold the heat in around the calipers and rotors shortening the life of
both. 90% of customers that complain about high pitched squeaks in
their brakes have covers on them. I love dust covers. Lynda

Lynda...

As usual, I'm confused... Why, under normal driving conditions, would
dust covers create a heat retention problem severe enough to damage the
calipers and rotors of a Mercedes Benz...?

What colour are these dust covers? Maybe that is why my brakes (unstalled and
maintained by Heavy Carl) squeal!!!! Where do I look to see if there is a
plastic cover in there?

Yep, I live in DC but I'm from Texas... And we have our way of saying
things... Or not...!

TOP 25 THINGS YOU'LL NEVER HEAR A TEXAN SAY!

25. "I'll take Shakespeare for $1000, Alex."
24. "Duct tape won't fix that."
23. "Come to think of it, I'll have a Heineken."
22. "We don't keep firearms in this house."
21. "You can't feed that to the dog."
20. "No kids in the back of the pickup, it's not safe."
19. "Wrasslin's fake."
18. "I'll have grapefruit today instead of that biscuits and gravy."
17. "Who's Richard Petty?"
16. "Oh, just give me the small bag of pork rinds."
15. "Deer heads detract from the decor."
14. "Spitting is such a nasty habit."
13. "Trim the fat off that steak!"
12. "The tires on that truck are too darn big."
11. "I'll have the arugula and radicchio salad."
10. "I've got it all on floppy disk."
9. "Would you like your fish poached or broiled?"
8. "My fiancé is registered at Tiffany's."
7. "Checkmate!"
6. "She's too old to be wearing that bikini."
5. "Does the salad bar have bean sprouts?"
4. "I don't have a favorite college team."
3. "Those shorts ought to be a little longer, Darlin'."
2. "Elvis who?"

And the number one thing you will NEVER hear a Texan say:

1. "I couldn't find a thing at Wal-Mart today!"

Yes Lee. Drivers from "UP NORTH" don't understand what 103 to 110
degrees does to these things. Us Texans have to stick together Lynda

With the heat lately, and all the sweat, we do! Ick! I will just have
to dream of the pleasant days of December, with the top down, and not
sticking to the seat. :-)

No, son. Don't be gittin yerself all worked up in the summer heat.
<spit> That'l give you some kind uh caniption... Take a deep breath, and a
long pull, and settle down. Now... Them there covers look kinda like a
rubber Frisbee with the center made of metal, and cut out to fit around the
bearings. The plan of northern aggression is that the rubber seal up all
the holes in the wheel that lets the dust out. Only thing is that in real
heat, the likes of which them Yankees ain't never seen, it also don't let
the heat out.

So... I don't think you have em. Ifin you did, with your luck, last
Saturday when you saw that cop at the side of the road, and had to slow
down, you, them boys, that big ol car, and 2000 jugs of hooch, your wheels
would'a just burst inta flame!
