I have a 12 year old 300E with a Becker Grand Prix radio-cassette player in
it. When I play a cassette tape the player wants to do one of three
things.....

1) The sound comes from the left speakers only (the radio works from both
sides)
2) Makes a "gurble" sound like it's trying to play both sides of the tape at
the same time.
3) Sometimes will play the tape just fine.

I have tried both the dry cleaners and the wet cleaners with no luck.
As a matter of fact the problem may have actually started/got worse after
using the wet method.

Any ideas out there?

Thanks
Mike

Get it serviced. The tape deck on those is weak.

After 12 years of service the tape head, guides and rollers may just
have build up some tape residue. The rubber belt and rollers may also
have gotten briddle and therefor cant pull and guide the tape anymore.
On a cassette player with several years of play time we usually
recommend a maitenance in addition to the repair job. Maintenance
includes cleaning the cassette drive and replacing the clutch, drive
belts, pinch rollers, and the tape head if it shows a lot of wear.
Changing all those parts requires a mechanical alignment of all the tape
guiding components and the tape head to assure even volume of the left
and right channels at the proper speed. Ignoring the alignment may
cause the tape to buckle; in a light case it may play uneven, in the
worst case the tape gets eaten. Before a tape gets eaten the electronic
tape monitor usually causes the player to eject the cassette.

For service talk to your Mercedes dealer about an After Warranty
Replacement, or visit us at www.beckerautosound.com for more service
options.

I hope this helps,

I have an 88 300E and am experiencing similar issues. Tape plays only out of the left front speaker. Radio doesn't work at all. I could really care less about the radio but the tape deck is essential. Did you ever get anywhere with your issues?
