Thanks!

E500 and 500E are not diferents cars, but E500 was produced 1993-1995 and
500e was produced 1989-1993

Hate to nit pick, but the 500E was first made available for the 1991
model year and 1994 was the last year. The change in nomenclature in
1993 reflected MB's new 'rationalized' naming system. I prefer the old
system as it told you more about the car.

The U.S. "500E" was offered in model years 1992 and 1993. Horsepower
went from around 322 to 347. In 1994, Mercedes-Benz changed the
nomenclature of all their models and the "500E" became an "E500."
Horsepower was reduced to around 315. 1994 was the first and last year
for the "E500" in the U.S.

At least now, though, the model numbers can accurately identify the
engine size of the car. No more 300E 2.8 or 190E 2.6 stuff. Also, the
old "E" ("Einspritzung") is no longer needed since all gas Benzes are
fuel injected anyway. True, long vs. short wheelbase S-Class models and
E-wagons aren't labeled like they used to be but overall I think the new
"system" is better.

P.S. Hate to nit pick but '92 (not '91) was the first model year for the
500E in the U.S.

Thanks for the info...I am looking for some differences in specifications as
well as the nomenclature differences I received!

The 500 E is a slightly lighter car with 7 more horsepower than the E 500.
92's had 322 vs. 315 for the 93 and 94. The 500 E also has better aluminum
brake calipers. I believe the front of the 92 to be better looking than
the 93 and 94.

No, no, no, no!! The 500E and E500 are not Euro only models, nor are
they powered by a 5.0 liter six. They were limited edition E-class cars
with 5.0 liter V8's shoehorned in along with sport suspensions and other
mods by Porsche in an arrangment with MB. They are absolutely legit US
spec cars (and fast as hell) ;^>
Please refer to previous posts in this thread for the production dates
by model.

E500 has Duel airbags and updated head and rear lamps, generally, it has all the
same 'goodies' the old one has plus more standard features also available in the
post 93' E-class

The 500 and 400 cars were equiped with V8s, not straight sixes.

To all of you who responded to my original posting, Thank you very much. I
purchased a 1992 500E with 45K miles and it is AWESOME. I would recommend this
automobile over any new or used vehicle on the market.

Anyone have any mod recommendations?

Lucky guy!
I would suggest keeping it stock. The 500E is likely to be one of
the most, if not the most collectible MB model of the 90's, and will
retain its value better if left alone.
