I wonder if 45-50 cetane is more comparable to "premium diesel" .... also, what
model MB do you drive?

My owner's manual recommends diesel fuels with a minimum cetane rating of 45
but cetane ratings are not posted on pumps in this state (South Carolina). (at
least I have never seen a rating on a fuel pump here)Most pumps here do not
even specify #1 or #2 but I assume it is all #2 being a warm climate.None of
the people at the stations I have inquired at knew the cetane ratings... Diesel
is available here from Texaco,Hess,Exxon,BP,and I think I have seen a Shell
station also...I suspect some of the fuels sold here have cetane ratings as low
as 40 as the car has occasionally run like crap when we have filled it at
different stations... Also it has run great after other fill-ups but my wife
drives it most of the time and can't remember where it was filled each time...I
know that bad fuel from a low volume staion can be a problem but all of these

Some Amoco is 45 or 50 cetane. I think my car runs better on it, so I go out of
my way to get it. Sometimes Amaco stations have non-Amaco gas, and some
non-Amaco stations also have 45 or 50 cetane. If they do not know, then it is
probably NOT high cetane. However the crappy running may also be due to
moisture or debris in the fuel.

It may be - one of the Amoco stations I get fuel at does say premium
diesel.

I am pretty sure I get low cetane fuel occasionally.I maintain the car well( 5
cyl W123 turbodiesel) and change the fuel filters yearly.I am sure my tank is
free of algae and water. the car will run great one tank then poorly on
another, presumably when I get the low cetane stuff..... come on guys, someone
out there must know the cetane ratings......

The postings that I HAVE seen in CT (Exxon and a couple of others)
indicate a Cetane
rating of 40.
