Thanks to Heav, who was kind enough to post photos of his injector
pump with the rack dampener clearly shown. I thought this would help
me solve my problem, but alas, my injector pump, of course, does not
have the dampener adjustment there, and in fact, I cannot find it
anywhere on the injector pump assembly.

FWIW, mine is a 1979 OM617 in a W123 300D

For the OM 617 they show two different pumps. The control rack is No
170 shown in picture No 3. A damper?

As the FIRST picture shown appears to be the type of pump with the
readily-accessible rack dampener adjustment pin, I must assume that
the SECOND picture depicts the one on mine, and I cannot see any rack
dampener adjustment shown on that one. This leaves me unsure as to
how, or whether I can, adjust the rack dampener.

Thanks for these very detailed diagrams.

The guy at Pacific Fuel Injection Service, Gus, who rebuilt my
injection pump, said that the problem with harmonic vibration between
the pump and the engine surfaced mysteriously in about 1980 and then
Mercedes began to experiment with different versions of rack damper
adjustment bolts with varying degrees of success. Your pump probably
pre dates the initiation of the rack adjustment bolt.

Well, my problem must be of some other origin then, than the rack
dampener, or the engine mounts.
