Some months ago I purchased a 88 560SL with 66,000 miles. the car is in
excellent condition but I'm amazed at the poor mileage. Near as I can tell
it's about 15 mpg highway driving. Appreciate input from 560SL owners.
Thanks in advance.

I have an older SL with the 4.5L engine - Gas Mileage is very low. However,
I only drive my car 3 or 4K per year, so who cares :)

Al,
I've owned my 86 560SL for a little over 2 years now, and I've put
about 10K miles on it. It averages 14 mpg or so in the city (Dallas).
In the summer, it's driven to work almost every day.
On two trips it's averaged a little better than 18. I'd check your
numbers carefully, you should get better than 15 on a trip!

But you didn't buy it for the gas mileage, anyway, did you? :-)

The fuel system is a critical, but simple componant of the engine and how it
uses the fuel it needs to keep the engine running.

The weather and other conditions from mother nature can change your fuel
milage but you should have the Lambda system checked for accuracy.

The sytem runs on a frequency that is regulated by many componants that feed
the main computer that takes this information and regulates fuel delivery.
You may need a new part or just an adjustment, but get it in right away,
because too much fuel will damage the motor.

The 560SL was originally rated for 16 to 22 mpg. I get 16, regardless of
how and where I drive mine. Not really that bad considering a curb weight
of 3800+ pounds, old technology, and a 5.6 liter V8.

Hey,

I have a 1987 560 SEL and I get roughly 15 city and 17 highway... I'd
say you were in the zone. The mighty 560 is not one to be driven
everyday for the light in the pocketbook (hence I drive my 300D daily!)

The 560SL, for all its power still gets much better milage than the 450SLs.
They got about 12 MPG! Then there was the 1980 Gas Crisis, Then there was the
380SL!
