My 1984 380SL temperature will rise past 100 degrees C after 5 miles of
driving. The temp. rises slowly until it gets a little over 80, then it
steadily heads for the 100's. The thermostat, water pump and temp sending
unit have been replaced and the gauge seems accurate based on test I have
run. When I pull over and turn off the car (for about 30seconds) and
restart the temp immediately drops back down to 80. As I drive the temp
gauge moves slightly in the high 80's but never reaches the 100's again.
Well, until the car cools and I start over again. Same thing happens with
the heater on or off.

Any Ideas? Radiator....Blockage....TIA

In the spring, summer, and fall my old 92 400E will run its temp up over 100
very quickly. Then the high speed fan kicks in and cools it off. Rather scary
to see that happen, but it looks like the normal speed fan is not adequate to
handle the big V8. It sounds like you at least don't normaly drive around with
a radiator of boiling water. That must be more comfortable. Maybe I will try
what you are doing and just pull over to let it cool down and see if it stays
down. Does your high speed fan kick in at all?

>I have a 1985 380se wich does the same thing. I have checked the thermostat
and cooling system as well. I seems to be worse in cold weather but once the
gauge comes down to normal range it will stay there the rest of the day. Any
suggestions ?

Try replacing the main radiator hoses. A strong suction can collapse a
hose, if it is showing its age. This is a longshot, but you have replaced
everything else. :-) Another thing to look at is the electric fan
thermostat. It could have a high trigger, but a reasonable hold point...

These temp gauges sometimes develop high resistance where their contacts engage
those of the circuit board.

Remove the gauge from the cluster by removing the two nuts holding it, then re
seat it. That will clean the contacts and may solve the problem, I have seen
this on several MB models. My 240D exhibited exactly these symptoms until I did
this-now it indicates perfectly at 87 degrees C.

Just a stupid question, but based on my experience vs what I have seen on here,
what temperature should a 92 400E (V8) run at in the summer in 90 to 100 F
vs in the winter at 30 to 60F here in SC ?
